Newsletter 10

This is the tenth newsletter of the iSTEPup foundation. This newsletter includes a summary of the annual report of 2019, and some student updates!

iSTEPup in a nutshell
iSTEPup provides local scholarships for ambitious students to become a nurse, midwife, doctor or pharmacist in low- and middle income countries. In a transparent manner we aim to improve sustainability of basic healthcare by creating educational chances for motivated but underprivileged people. Because of many of our donors are international, the newsletters are written in English. Spread the word!

Annual Report 2019

Enduring a second year is a good test to check whether the foundation will thrive after the initial year with a kickstart. We, as the iSTEPup team, are happy to tell you we had another very successful year. A total of eleven students were being supported by iSTEPup in 2019, including our first alumni Rehema Sulle, midwife in Tanzania. Seven new students applied for a scholarship in 2019: meet them and their story on our website.

Overview of 2019
We succeeded to achieve all our goals which we will describe here using numbers:
● 175 donors that helped us
● 2 new partners involved
● 14.462 euro raised
○ 9%: companies ○ 30%: individual donors ○ 61%: foundations (See below)
● 96,58% of all donations contributed to our mission (our aim: >95%)
● New website including student pages
● New banner & business cards partly sponsored
● 87 social media posts
● 17 student applications: ○ 7 enrolled students ○ 10 did not meet the criteria
(Figure below: recurrent donations in red, one-time donations in blue)
Goals for 2020
Although most of our published articles in newspapers, magazines and on various websites are written in Dutch, we are aiming for a higher load of international awareness. Furthermore, it is our aim to enroll 4 new students, fundraise 10.000 euro and find new donors in 2020. Moreover, in order to grow, plan for future applications and be more sustainable; we aim to find more donors who are willing to donate periodically.

Student Updates

To prevent a corona outbreak, many countries where our students are living, will go in lockdown. iSTEPup has already received some messages from students who have to temporarily stop their studies.
Adwao Amoah

I began the school year with much ecstasy. A lot happened as well. During this year, I joined the audit committee of the Medical Students Association (MSA) of my school. I also wrote five different exams of which the results are yet to be uploaded on my portal. A lot more would have taken place if not for the COVid-19 outbreak which made the government close down all schools in the country. Moreover, this would not have been possible if not for your benevolence to me. I am very grateful for your immense help to me.

Paul Kalungi

“Schools, public gatherings and universities were closed on 20th/03/2020 for the next 32 days following the presidential directive. As I speak now, airports and boarders are also closed. As Ugandans we hope we won't be hit by this disease as we are ranked among the top three counties with the population full of young people.
My university is still trying to find possible ways on how lecturers can teach us online such that the whole full month doesn't go to waste. I pray for those who have lost their dear ones because of this deadly disease. May God strengthen us all.”
