Over the past weeks, ACTCOSS has been calling for the Federal Government to commit to continuing to fund the Equal Remuneration Order (ERO) supplementation for community organisations in the ACT. Our focused advocacy on this issue recognises this as one of the most serious issues facing our sector.
A survey of community service sector leaders (pdf) has found that without the renewal of this funding, community service organisations would be forced to reduce staff or services.
Together with the Australian Council of Social Service, ACTCOSS has asked for the skills and experience of our workforce to be recognised, and our crucial work for the community to be supported through fair pay.
We have told the Government that if this funding is not renewed, not only will important services be further unable to meet demand, but permanent job losses and cuts to services will follow. This is unacceptable as people will not be able to get the help they desperately need, such as emergency food relief, affordable housing or mental health services.
As we celebrated International Women’s Day on Sunday, we are reminded of the impact losing the ERO would have on our community service sector workforce made up of 80% women, and how this would undermine our progress towards gender equality.
We encourage our members to speak out about what impact of losing the ERO would be on the vulnerable members of society their crucial services serve, and call for the Federal Government to commit to #fairfunding4fairpay using this hashtag on social media.
