tonight's pick-me-ups

Things we're doing to unwind and get cozy before bed tonight:

💻 Trying not to lose our minds. Being able to work from home without going crazy takes some time. Create a dedicated workspace, set working hours, and change out of your sweats
to help transition yourself into this new routine.

Creating deeper connections.
Showing empathy in the work place has been proven to help boost co-working morale. We tend to feel what others near us are feeling, so take the time to ask how others are doing, offer help, and really listen.

🎮 Filling up our free time. Even while keeping our social distance,
these awesome iPhone games (like Mario Cart Tour and Gardenscapes) let you relax and still hang out with your friends.

😴 Managing our inner night owl. If you're like us, you've been finding it even harder than normal to sleep these days. Try keeping  a 'worry journal' near your bed or even adjusting the temperature in your room
as things to do right now to help you fall asleep.

Reads when you're up late anyway. Here are tonight's round-up for every occasion:

 HEALTH
For when you're thinking of the greater good ~ While social distancing might seem like a prison sentence, we are in fact saving the lives of many while coming together as a nation. "Individuals are asked to voluntarily avoid interactions in crowds, public events, unnecessary travel, and to work at home where feasible. Evidence shows these measures are effective, though they come at a price. Like anything, public health measures have costs that must be weighed ethically. Social distancing is disruptive. The pandemic has affected supply chains, and precipitously dropped financial markets. Workers, especially those without paid sick leave, lose essential income and have already experienced layoffs in heavily affected sectors. Paradoxically, social distancing is also profoundly communal. Eula Biss, in her book on immunity and vaccination, wrote, 'It is through us, literally through our bodies, that certain public health measures are enacted.' It may be that love in the time of COVID-19 means protecting each other from the dangers of being social animals."

CAREER  For when your hate fire has been fueled ~ We've all had a shitty job or a terrible boss that makes us want to scream, rip our hair out, or storm out of the office. Trust us, you're not alone in these thoughts. "When you feel mistreated by an employer, it’s gratifying to imagine payback. It’s deeply satisfying to imagine seeing justice served — and being the one to serve it. In reality, dramatic resignations usually don’t go over quite as the exiting employee probably hoped. Rarely does an employer think, 'We really brought this upon ourselves' or 'We should have treated Jane better when we had the chance.' Rather than delivering righteous justice, these exits more commonly get the employee labeled as the problem. Ultimately, the best quitting revenge is simply quitting. When you’re at the point of fantasizing about creative or dramatic ways to leave, it’s usually a sign that it’s time to start planning a professional exit."

RELATIONSHIPS  For when you're feeling less than blessed ~ We're talking to the Madison Prewett's of the world when we say: if your bae's Mom hates you, we know how to help. "The first step once you realize your de facto mother-in-law may not like you is to take a deep breath, according to Moraya Seeger DeGeare, MA, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. DeGeare notes that stopping to take a moment may seem silly, but it's more helpful than you'd think. Try to understand how you're feeling and where you're coming from. "Say, 'Okay, this person hates me. This isn't in my head. Let me breathe and acknowledge that not everyone is going to love me,' she explains. Once you've established that there's tension between you and your partner's mom, it's time to find out how your significant other feels about the situation. For starters, you could bring up your feelings by referencing a certain situation where you felt attacked by your partner's mother. They could've cut you off at dinner the night before, or even confessed their feelings of dislike for you on national television — just an example. The main idea is to be open about your feelings."

CULTURE  For when you want your voice to be heard ~ Podcasts have become a very intimate space where everyone is welcome and feels comfortable sharing their personal stories. "In many ways, podcasts allow a more diverse group of people to have a voice (no pun intended). The media industry as a whole has traditionally been dominated by men, but the relative simplicity of creating a podcast offers so many more people the opportunity to share their ideas with larger audiences. Not only does this relatively low barrier of entry allow more people to easily create their own podcasts, but it allows those podcast hosts to bring on others from marginalized groups to share their messages as well. Another amazing thing about podcasts is the intimacy of the experience for the listener ... Podcasts allow the listener to hear the hesitations, the emotion, when someone is thrown by something' — all right into their earbuds."

🧘‍♀️ Try stretching out your rotator cuff if you slept on your arm wrong 🧘‍♀️
  • Sit up straight with your feet planted firmly below you.
  • Lift your right arm straight up and bend your right elbow, dropping your forearm behind your head, right palm grazing your right shoulder.
  • Bend your left elbow behind your back and reach it up so that the top of your left hand grazes your back with your palm facing away from you.
  • Reach to clasp your right hand to your left and hook your fingers together, creating a stretch in your right external rotator cuff and your left internal rotator cuff. (Grab a towel if your hands can’t quite reach each other.)
☁️🌛 Goodnight and go tuck yourself ☁️
