Alway Boxing Club

I was interviewed both the BBC and Wales Online this week about our decision to fund Alway Boxing Club.

The club received money from my Community Fund to deliver community boxing sessions and one-to-one mentoring to the community in Alway.

From what I have seen so far I am very impressed, with participants learning about disciple and nutrition, while getting fit, building confidence and making new friends.

I look forward to seeing how the club develops over the next year.

Modern Slavery delegation

I was honoured to join the Wales Anti-Slavery Leadership Delegation to Brussels this week.

As the all-Wales PCC lead for Modern Day Slavery this is a subject close to my heart. Modern slavery affects the most vulnerable people in society and we must do all we can to protect and support victims.

This was an excellent opportunity to ensure that our efforts to tackle this issue are aligned with those of our international partners.

National Youth Work Conference

My team attended the National Youth Work Conference in Cardiff this week.

In addition to many informative talks and workshops there were inspirational speeches from the Chair of the Interim Youth Work Board for Wales, Keith Towler, and the Minister for Education and Skills, Kirsty Williams.

It was also a great opportunity to network with a range of youth work organisations, and make new connections with a view to greater partnership working.

Pharmacist's Defence Association

The Pharmacist's Defence Association visited my office this week to discuss how we can work together to help tackle violence against community pharmacists in Gwent.

It is shocking that pharmacists should experience violence from the very people they are trying to help, and this will form part of my discussions when I next meet with the Chief Constable.

Talk Blaenau Gwent

My team were out supporting the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board at their Talk Blaenau Gwent event this week.

This was an opportunity for local people to meet with a range of decision makers, ask questions and give feedback on services in their area.

The team engaged with a range of people and we will be supporting more of these events throughout Gwent in the coming months.

Voice of communities is loud and clear as proceeds of crime money is given to Gwent community groups

The Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner attended the Gwent High Sheriff’s Community Fund ‘Your Voice, Your Choice’ at Llanhilleth Miners Institute.

The awards event was hosted in partnership with the Gwent High Sheriff’s Community Fund, Gwent and Community Foundation Wales, and my office.

The Community Fund aims to build safer communities in Gwent by distributing funds to projects that mentor and inspire young people to fulfil their potential. The awards provide an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of volunteers and community groups who help improve the lives of people in Gwent.

PSB Active Citizenship event

My team also attended the GAVO ‘The Power Of Community’ PSB Active Citizenship event at the Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel in Usk this week.

The event brought together a wide range of organisations and individuals to look at how active citizens are the key to driving the Monmouthshire Wellbeing Plan forward.

At the event the Our Monmouthshire engagement platform was launched which is an online tool to help bring communities together to share ideas and promote volunteering opportunities. Visit Our Monmouthshire for details.
