Happy Purim!
Arthur Szyk. Queen Esther: Dame de Pique. Lodz, 1935. Watercolor and gouache.
In honor of today's holiday, we're happy to share several articles commemorating Queen Esther's defense of the Jewish people and Arthur Szyk's captivating works on the subject. Please see David Geffen's recent article "A Soldier in Art: The Megillat Esther of Arthur Szyk," published in the Jerusalem Post on March 5, 2020. And from the archives, see also my 2010 article "The Arts: Arthur Szyk and his Books of Esther" in Hadassah Magazine.
We're also pleased to share positive reviews of the exhibition In Real Times. Arthur Szyk & Human Rights (1926-1951), currently on view at the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life at UC Berkeley (more on the exhibition and visiting hours here).

In her recent article "Political Art for These Times: The Whole Megillah," Shelley S. Hebert writes, "While many associate Szyk with his famous Haggadah, the spirit of his work is perfect for Purim. It invites us to look very closely at a multi-layered story of history, humanity, power, human rights and politics. It is the whole megillah for our era and another reason why In Real Times is a message we cannot ignore." Check out the rest of Hebert's article at The Times of Israel here.

Read more about Szyk's "stunning works of graphic art" in Lezak Shallat's review in the Jewish News of Northern California here and Frances Dinkelspiel's Berkeleyside article here.
