Possible New Programs at Thomaston Public Library

Upcoming Events

March 5: Mystery Book Club

The Thomaston Public Library Mystery Book Club will meet on Thursday, March 5 at 11 am. This discussion was originally planned for February’s meeting but was postponed to March due to inclement weather. In response to the prevalence of male detectives in mysteries, the book club decided to switch its focus to the opposite. Book club members are welcome to read the book of their choosing, provided it is a mystery with a female protagonist, and can see the librarians for additional resources and help in choosing a title.

The Thomaston Public Library Mystery Book Club meets the first Thursday of every month at 11 am. April’s selection will be decided at March’s meeting. For more information, please contact the library at (207) 354-2453 or at programs@thomaston.lib.me.us.

Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. March 17: Intergenerational Book Club

On Tuesday, March 17 at 2:30 PM, the Thomaston Intergenerational Book Club will discuss A Year by the Sea: Thoughts of an Unfinished Woman by Joan Anderson.

From the publisher:

"An entrancing memoir of how one woman's journey of self-discovery gave her the courage to persevere in re-creating her life.

"Life is a work in progress, as ever-changing as a sandy shoreline along the beach. During the years Joan Anderson was a loving wife and supportive mother, she had slowly and unconsciously replaced her own dreams with the needs of her family. With her sons grown, however, she realized that the family no longer centered on the home she provided, and her relationship with her husband had become stagnant. Like many women in her situation, Joan realized that she had neglected to nurture herself and, worse, to envision fulfilling goals for her future. As her husband received a wonderful job opportunity out-of-state, it seemed that the best part of her own life was finished. Shocking both of them, she refused to follow him to his new job and decided to retreat to a family cottage on Cape Cod. At first casting about for direction, Joan soon began to take pleasure in her surroundings and call on resources she didn't realize she had. Over the course of a year, she gradually discovered that her life as an "unfinished woman" was full of possibilities. Out of that magical, difficult, transformative year came A Year by the Sea, a record of her experiences and a treasury of wisdom for readers.”

On the third Tuesday of every month, the Intergenerational Book Club, a group of men and women of all ages, comes together at the library to share their opinions and ideas about the selected book. All are welcome at the Thomaston Public Library on March 17 at 2:30 PM. If you live in Thomaston and would like to attend but need a ride, please call the library at (207) 354-2453 a week before the discussion date.

For April, the group will be reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Copies will be available to borrow at the library and through interlibrary loan. For more information, please contact the library at (207) 354-2453 or at programs@thomaston.lib.me.us.

March 20: Communi-TEA!

As some of you may know, our fearless leader Diane recently encountered a bad batch of ice while walking one of her dogs and broke her leg. She's recuperating, but won't be able to make all of the amazing treats she usually does for Communi-TEA. This month's tea, therefore, will be a potluck affair! Join us on March 20 from 3 to 4:30 PM, and if you are able to bring a dish to share, please do. All are welcome!

March 23: Silent Book Club

"Ah, how good it is to be among people who are reading!" - Rainer Maria Rilke

Need an excuse to set aside some time to read? Or perhaps you haven't joined a traditional book club because it feels too much like the assigned reading in high school? Check out Thomaston Public Library's Silent Book Club!

Join us for a few minutes of low-key (and completely optional! Introverts welcome!) socializing to share what we have read lately or are currently reading and some light snacks, followed by reading in companionable silence. There is no required reading, so bring your own book or ask the librarians or the fellow book club members for a recommendation to borrow when you arrive. We meet at the library on the evening of the fourth Monday of every month from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Learn more about Silent Book Clubs here!

What We're Recommending

Diane has been thoroughly enjoying Deanna Raybourn's Lady Julia Grey series! This historical mystery series, set in Victorian London, begins with Silent in the Grave and the young widow Lady Julia Gray investigating the sudden death of her husband with the assistance of the enigmatic private investigator Nicholas Brisbane. It opens with these fantastic lines: "To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband's dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor."
Missy read and enjoyed Alice Hoffman's latest, The World That We Knew. Set during World War II, a Jewish mother knows she must send her twelve-year-old daughter, Lea, away to save her and seeks help from a renowned rabbi. The rabbi's daughter is the one to offer hope in the form of creating a golem, a mystical creature sworn to protect Lea. Alice Hoffman is known for her talent with magical realism and this book was no exception. Request it today!
Caroline recently finished White Fragility: Why It's So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism by Robin DiAngelo. She says, "This one has been on my TBR (to be read list) for a while and though it's short, it took me some time to get through. It's not an easy read, but so, so worth it. Robin DiAngelo explains systemic racism and why white people react the way we do when confronted with our own privilege and complicity so well. This book really made me examine my own thoughts and behaviors - especially as a self-identified 'woke' white person - and aim to learn, grow, and do better! Well worth your time to read."
Caitlin highly recommends Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus by Dusti Bowling. She says, "With an accurate depiction of life with Tourette's and disabled characters who have the spunk to conquer mountains, Insignificant Events should be on every school's required reading list. Dusti Bowling writes with compassion, heart, and accuracy regarding the conditions from which her characters suffer. If you need a way to introduce kids to the basic questions regarding Tourette's and how to talk about disabilities, this book is a wonderful place to start. 10/10 would read and recommend over and over again."
