2020 Stewardship Campaign and Congregational Gatherings

Our annual “Growing 2030 Possibilities” stewardship campaign is happening right now!  Look for information in your mail, in the community room, and on UUCM Happenings. This year we are aiming for 125 pledges totaling $355,000. This will fund the cost of our new minister and growth in key church programs. To learn more about the campaign, and the future of UUCM, please plan to attend one of the 90 minute Congregational Gatherings on March 7, 8, 15, or 16. At these events you will have a chance to connect with others in the congregation, to hear about the good things that are happening, and to learn about the new Minister and plans for UUCM’s future. You do not need to register to attend, but it helps us plan if you sign up online at bit.ly/uucmgather2020 or use the paper signup sheets in the Community Room at church.

In the Interim

Each week, the interim ministry team will share a reflection on the Soul Matters monthly theme, the state of the church, or the state of the world. This week's post is offered by Arif Mamdani.

Wisdom and Serenity

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Serenity Prayer recently:

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference.

Written by theologian and philosopher Reinhold Niebuhr and adopted by Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs, it is so commonplace in our culture today that it’s easy to pass it by without really taking it in, and so today, I’d like to invite us to exactly that - slow down and take it in. >>

WORSHIP: SUNDAY, MARCH 8

The Wisdom of Dying

10:00 AM
Guest Worship Leader: Rev. Harlan Limpert
Worship Associate: Stefanie Bell-Egge

Synopsis: People who take pride in being in charge of every aspect of their lives – who they’ll marry, where they’ll live, what kind of career path they’ll follow — will often hand over end-of-life decision making to complete strangers. How does that happen? And what can be done to stop it?

RE Classes In Session

After the Service
Feeling shy?  Overwhelmed?  Can’t hear or stand up easily?  New here?  If coffee hour is too much for any reason, consider joining the quieter version — come to the front of the sanctuary and chat quietly with a few people!

Red and Teal Cup Greeters
Find the colorful coffee cups after the service each Sunday!
Those holding RED coffee cups are especially available to orient newcomers, answer questions and offer helpful resources. Folks holding TEAL coffee cups know all about social justice work at UUCM and would love to connect with you.

March's Social Generosity Recipient:
MN Food Share and IOCP’s Prevent Hunger March Campaign - Nearly half of those who come to Interfaith Outreach for the first time need food. With the help of this generous community, IOCP distributed 1 million pounds of food and household essentials last year. Interfaith Outreach also works holistically to prevent future hunger through employment and family support services. Our own UUCM youth will be speaking to us throughout the month about this important initiative.

Note: All cash placed in the Sunday collection, as well as checks to “UUCM” with “Social Generosity” in the memo line, will go towards the Social Generosity cause for the current month. Donate by PayPal or credit card at bit.ly/uucmsocialgen. You may also use the basket to make other contributions to UUCM. Simply make your check out to "UUCM" with instructions in the memo line.

ACTION ITEMS
NEW Update on Church Parking: Do Not Use West Outlot
The state-owned property just west of the church (the “outlot”) should no longer be used for church parking.  We learned this week that the property is being sold to our neighbors and we have not had a chance to talk with them about continued use. So we will respect the property boundaries, and ask that you use other parking options.  If you are not able to park in the main lot, you can park on Wayzata Blvd to the east of Crosby Road.  We will keep you updated as the situation changes.

We welcome sword swallowers, bands, poets, jugglers, dancers, tricksters, skits, dancers, liars, magicians, singers, musicians, ensembles, artists, photographers, story tellers, in groups or solo. This event is FREE and fun for the whole family. NEW Calling All Drama Enthusiasts
In worship this past month you may have seen one of the skits done for the Story for All. Please contact me - Jennifer Swick at dre@uucmtka.org - if you or anyone (or everyone :) in your family is interested in helping to add drama to worship, or possibly RE, in the future. I'm hoping to create a list of people with whom I can share about a project idea. People can sign on, project by project, when interested & available (rehearsals are generally held before worship the day of the skit). Thank you!
*LAST CHANCE* Calling All Guitarists
UUCM is putting together a guitar orchestra for the worship service on Sunday, March 29th. We'll play a number of songs that the congregation can sing along with as well as a piece or two of our own to build a lively and communal music-making experience! And this is not limited to just guitars - if you play an instrument that has frets and strings, including banjo, ukulele, bass, mandolin, and more, you are more than welcome to participate. The majority of the music will be read off of chord charts, but all ages and experience levels are welcome; even if you only know a handful of notes or chords, we'll make sure to find a place for you! The time commitment will be the Sunday of the service, March 29th from 9 to 11 AM as well as the Saturday before, March 28th, from 2 to 4 PM. If you are interested, please email Paul at musicdirector@uucmtka.org by THIS SUNDAY, March 8 to sign up.
Calling All Artists
April is Member Art Show time. The North Wall Art Space will feature the work of members and friends of UUCM. Oils, photography, watercolors, fiber art, calligraphy, collage, pastels, mixed media...show us what you do!  Please enter your work on the sign up sheet in the community room. Your framed art work must be dropped off at UUCM before March 28th. For more information contact Christy Dachelet at czdachelet@comcast.net
ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPCOMING EVENTS
New Minister: Board Update Week 8

The first Stewardship Gathering took place last Sunday and there was a lively question and answer session about the selection of a new minister.  Here are two of those questions:

Is developmental ministry a category of ministry?  Is developmental ministry recognized by the UUA?  Yes and Yes!  Developmental ministry is a recognized category of ministry by the UUA and we are working closely with the UUA Transitions staff during the selection process.  Developmental ministry is a newer model of ministry which is why many in the congregation may not have heard of it before.  The decision to move forward with the developmental ministry model was made after much reflection by the Board including what we learned from the Congregational Listening Sessions, with support and input from our current interim ministers, and in discussion with and approval by the UUA Transitions staff.

If you have not already done so, please plan to attend a Stewardship Gathering.  We welcome your questions.
NEW Path to Membership Class - Exploring UUCM
THIS SUNDAY, March 8 from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM in the Oak Room

This class is one of two classes offered on the path to membership at UUCM. In this class, we will respond to your questions, explore information and opportunities about our particular church, and discuss how we relate to the wider UU Region and the Unitarian Universalist Association. Visitors and friends who have attended both of these “Exploring UUism” classes are eligible to become members of UUCM. Childcare is available for this class. Current members and friends are very welcome to join in, as well. Facilitated by Gary Charles, Membership Ministry.
Homeless Day on the Hill
Wednesday, March 11 from 9AM to 3PM
Training location: Central Presbyterian Church, 500 Cedar St. in Saint Paul

Join the Social Justice Team and many other Minnesotans in learning about and advocating for people experiencing homeless and/or housing issues in Minnesota. Training will be provided and should be interesting and informative for us in this new focus area. An appointment can be made to speak to your legislators. We can carpool from UUCM. Please sign up at the Social Justice table or email Mary Cotton at mary3452@hotmail.com, so that we can organize the group going and provide any additional information you might need. Contact Mary or Sue Fust (drlanasue@yahoo.com) with any questions.
*LAST CHANCE* Camp Unistar registration open!
Did you know there is a UU camp only 3 hours away on Cass Lake, MN? Registration is open for two Youth Weeks in June, a Work Week in June, and 10 Family Weeks throughout the summer. Come experience new and old friends on Star Island where there are no cars, only State Forest lands to explore and enjoy. Camper registration closes on March 7 when all applications received to-date are considered. You can still register after this but may not get in to the week you’d like. Youth entering 7-12th grade especially are encouraged to apply for the Youth Week of their choice by March 7th. Please see http://www.campunistar.org/ for more information.

Phishing Scam Targeting Local Churches
If you receive an email or text message that appears to be from a UUCM minister or church member asking you for money or to purchase gift cards, please be sure to always speak with the alleged sender directly (call or speak to them in person) BEFORE giving money or purchasing gift cards of any kind. Learn more on UUCM Happenings and feel free to reach out to Rev. Meg, Rev. Terri or Arif with any questions.
