Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program
on world affairs.

Hello <<First Name>>,

On Tuesday, March 24th, at 11:45 a.m. at the Durango Public Library, our fifth discussion will be “U.S. Relations with the Northern Triangle.” Moderator Dr. Benjamin Waddell will present background materials and a film by the Foreign Policy Association, and lead participants in a discussion of the issues.

Combating illegal immigration has become a priority of the Trump administration. The Northern Triangle of Central America, made up of Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala, is a special target of the administration, which hold the nations responsible for the large flow of migrants from Latin America to the U.S. With funds from the U.S. cut, how can the Northern Triangle countries curtail migration?

Dr. Waddell is a first-generation college student, who grew up in Colorado and New Mexico. Around the age of 12, he began working on construction sites near Telluride, where he met numerous immigrants from Latin America. Captivated by their astounding efforts to overcome adversity, Ben chose to study issues related to poverty, inequality, and emigration in the Americas.

Ben holds a Ph.D. in Sociology (2013, University of New Mexico), a M.A in Latin American Studies (2009, University of New Mexico), and a B.A. in International Affairs (2005, CU Boulder).  He researches the impact of international migration on human well-being. He has published in Sociology of Development, Latin American Research Review, The Social Science Journal and Rural Sociology.

Ben’s primary interest continues to lie in the realm of education, which he believes is the heartbeat of humanity. As an educator, Ben aims to promote equal opportunity structures for all people regardless of the conditions they were born into. His favorite quote comes from Albert Einstein: “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” Ben’s  goal as an educator is to help students imagine a better world.

Join the discussion.

We encourage you to attend and bring a sack lunch.
