Follow up from this week's gathering

We had fun hanging out with you!

Dear friends,

We loved seeing you at our Spring quarterly gathering in Washington county. Thank you especially for sharing your experiences encountering anti-immigrant messages in our communities. We missed those of you who could not join us but don’t worry. Below, you will find electronic copies of the documents we shared and an action plan for the next 30-60-90 days.

During our time together, we workshopped values-based local messages that provide an alternative way of looking at immigration issues for members of our community who may be conflicted or confused, yet open to conversation  (e.g. the “movable middle”). As we see attacks on sanctuary cities and states, and ICE issuing subpoenas on local law enforcement in Oregon with extreme cases meant to feed into national election messaging, we want to be prepared to engage the movable middle.

We also spent time writing messages to the Uniform Court Trials Rule Committee (UTCR) to issue a permanent rule preventing ICE from making arrests in courthouses without a warrant and asking them to expand the rule. We brainstormed creative ways to engage our communities in public comment huddles before the March 20th deadline so the UTCR knows that our communities deeply care about making sure our immigrant communities have access to courthouses.  Here is a link to IMIrJ’s campaign to get ICE out of Courthouses

So, what is next? Look at the 30-60-90 day plans we worked on together (see the picture) and look below for details and links.

IN THE NEXT 30 DAYS:

  • Public Comment Huddles to make permanent and expand the courthouse rule
    • Deadline: March 20th
    • Use this instruction sheet with information about ways to submit your comment and guiding points
    • Print these postcards to have members in your community submit comments
    • Don’t be afraid to get creative! Folks in Salem had the amazing idea of having a large sheet of butcher paper out after worship for folks to write comments and sending a picture of it as a comment.
  • Meet with local law enforcement regarding ICE subpoenas
    • We have formed small groups who will visit local sheriffs and police chiefs.
    • If you are interested in joining or leading a meeting, please contact info@imirj.org - we’ll support and accompany you in this process.
  • Sign up for Countering White Nationalism cohort
    • See our announcement for our pilot cohort in Countering White Nationalism in partnership with the Western States Center (scroll down after the dates for our gathering).
    • Space is filling up fast! Sign up as soon as possible
  • Join a call for IMIrJ congregations that have gone or will go to the border with Latin American Working Group Executive Director, Lisa Haugaard.
    • March 16th from noon to 1 PM
    • RSVP here for login information
  • Riots and Rebels
    • March 20 and 21st

IN THE NEXT 60 DAYS:
  • Join Statewide Strategy and Messaging Call
    • Date and time TBD
    • IMIrJ will host a call with information on messaging and how to practice it
  • Fill out IMIrJ’s Congregational Accompaniment Form
    • Deadline: April 24th
    • We ask that all congregations in relationship with IMIrJ (whether the full congregation is engaged or a small team) fill out the form. It helps us know how we can accompany your congregation and know who to call in case that rapid response is needed.
  • Housing/immigration power mapping
    • April 23rd, 6-8 PM
  • Sikh Center of Oregon hosts gathering
    • April 17, 18, 19

IN THE NEXT 90 DAYS:

Thank you again for your work and commitment,

Ron and Sarah
