We had fun hanging out with you!
Dear friends,
We loved seeing you at our Spring quarterly gathering in Washington county. Thank you especially for sharing your experiences encountering anti-immigrant messages in our communities. We missed those of you who could not join us but don’t worry. Below, you will find electronic copies of the documents we shared and an action plan for the next 30-60-90 days.
During our time together, we workshopped values-based local messages that provide an alternative way of looking at immigration issues for members of our community who may be conflicted or confused, yet open to conversation (e.g. the “movable middle”). As we see attacks on sanctuary cities and states, and ICE issuing subpoenas on local law enforcement in Oregon with extreme cases meant to feed into national election messaging, we want to be prepared to engage the movable middle.
We also spent time writing messages to the Uniform Court Trials Rule Committee (UTCR) to issue a permanent rule preventing ICE from making arrests in courthouses without a warrant and asking them to expand the rule. We brainstormed creative ways to engage our communities in public comment huddles before the March 20th deadline so the UTCR knows that our communities deeply care about making sure our immigrant communities have access to courthouses. Here is a link to IMIrJ’s campaign to get ICE out of Courthouses.
So, what is next? Look at the 30-60-90 day plans we worked on together (see the picture) and look below for details and links.
