Belay Device Policy Change

Dear Mesa Rim Community Members:

In an effort to help lead our industry, Mesa Rim will be changing our policies and will no longer allow the use of passive tube-style belay devices and will require all belayers to use Assisted Braking Devices (ABDs)*. We are confident in this decision and believe that it is our responsibility to both improve and uphold current industry standards and best practices that mitigate risk for our community.

We acknowledge that passive tube-style belay devices, and other similar devices, have their place in the climbing world; however, moving in this direction will help minimize the risk of belayer related accidents in our gyms. ABDs not only provide a technological advantage but are also considered to be the new standard for belaying by a vast majority of professionals in the climbing industry.

Over the next 3 months, Mesa Rim will be supporting our community in the transition to ABDs. After 6/8/2020, passive tube-style belay devices will no longer be allowed for belaying in our facilities. If you are currently belay certified with us, you won't need to re-test; however, we will be offering on the spot training for all new ABD users to ensure you are comfortable using a new device before belaying. We will also be offering 30% off all ABDs in our Pro Shops until 6/8/2020 to help alleviate the cost to switch. Please let the front desk know if you need any assistance, or have any questions about our new policy.

*Approved ABD’s include: Petzl GriGri and GriGri+, Edelrid Jul2 and Mega Jul, Black Diamond Pilot, Mad Rock Lifeguard, Trango Vergo and Cinch, Climb Tech ClickUps and AlpineUp, Mammut Smart, Wild Country’s Revo, and Beal Birdie.
