Update Regarding COVID-19 Virus and our Worship Practices
In light of heightening concerns about the COVID-19 Virus, the CDC and County Public Health guidelines and recommendations from our Synod office all suggest that we take significant measures to minimize the spread of the virus. For this reason our Sunday morning worship will be a “Service of the Word” without communion, coffee hour or the Adult Forum for the next several Sundays. In addition to discouraging physical contact during the exchange of the peace, we will not pass the offering plate. While we are planning to continue our Wednesday Lenten evening prayer worship, we will not have the soup supper preceding the worship. Other upcoming church events, including the Pancake Palooza and Inga Swearingen Benefit Concert have been cancelled.
While some of these responses may seem to be extraordinary, there have been other times when the Church's worship and meeting practices have been impacted by pandemic. Long ago Martin Luther faced a similar situation as the plague ravaged Europe. In response to the crisis he wrote:
"I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God." –
Martin Luther, "Whether One May Flee From a Deadly Plague," 1527.
We want our faith community to be a place where fears are calmed and anxiety lessened. That is why communication and self-care are so important. In addition to caring for yourself, you can help us be aware of members (and others) who may be in need. Do call your friends and neighbors and stay in touch with us here at Mt. Carmel by phone (805-544-2133) and/or email at info@mtcarmelslo.org. We will continue to monitor CDC, County Public Health and ELCA updates in determining our worship practices and event scheduling at Mt. Carmel. Watch for further updates in emails, or weekly VISTA and on our website mtcarmelslo.org.
