UNSW AccSoc Presents: Psychometric Brain Training [MRP Stage 2]
Psychometric assessments are used by employers to filter through a huge pool of candidates and come in various forms, such as Numeric Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning and Situational Judgement tests. Essentially, employers are looking for candidates with the appropriate skill set to match their roles.

Our experienced Educational Events directors, who were previously Big 4 vacationers, will be hosting a 2-hour workshop, where they’ll be sharing their insights and tips on mastering psychometric testing. After that, you’ll have the chance to apply that knowledge in a practice psychometric test in assessment-like conditions. At the end of the test you will receive feedback on how to best approach the different psychometric modules available to recruiters.

It’s better to be prepared than not...so let’s ace these aptitude tests together!

Top 5 Tips for Psychometric Testing

The key to achieving a top score is practice, preparation and consistency. Familiarity with the format is the best way to give yourself a competitive edge, but be careful not to try and ‘game’ the test: they’re designed to highlight the consistency and integrity of responses.

1. Get into the right headspace: Ensure you get a good nights sleep, do some exercise to clear your mind, have water ready beside you and genuinely focus on the mental labyrinth that you're about to tackle. Remember to ensure you won't be disturbed either by tech or your sibling storming into your room in the middle of the test!

2. Find out what type of test you're going to take: There are a variety of psychometric tests that firms use so speak to grads that are working there right now or even your fellow peers who are applying.

3. Use and abuse the resources available: If you’re allowed to do practice questions ahead of time, do the practice question! It might seem simple, but these little opportunities to get ahead of the curve are lost in the flurry of nerves and excitement at sitting the test.

4. Familiarise yourself with the types of questions: There are usually two types of questions; verbal and numerical aptitude are multiple-choice and requires speed. The other is abstract aptitude tests are always different and requires thinking on your feet, thus practise is the key to this.

5. Pace yourself: All tests are timed, so make sure you move on when the question is too difficult because you can always come back to it later. In saying that, don't be afraid to spend time thinking about the answer because quality (correct answers) over quantity (of wrong answers)!

- Why did you join AccSoc?
I was a completely clueless first year who saw all the "Join my Subcommittee!!" and AccSoc happened to be the first one that came up - but it was honestly the best decision I've made in my university journey.

The skills I've learnt from being in IT has allowed me to beef up my own portfolio, and as cheesy as it sounds I've honestly made friends for life - the kinds of friends where they're the first ones you tag in memes, the first ones to go to when you need advice, and the first ones you'd invite to when organising that roadtrip you never end up going to - which, in AccSoc, we do end up going to!
