INTERNATIONAL DEBUT:
In Conversation with Maison Noire Américaine

Wednesday, January 8, 2020 | Paris, France

"We talked about how our work is esteemed, the daily challenges we face, and the systemic complexities impacting our communities. But most importantly, we spoke about bringing honor to our professions."   - Jasmine Brown
Advisory Council member Jasmine Brown led BlackFemaleProject to Paris, France. In partnership with Maison Noire Américaine, Jasmine facilitated a conversation about the Black expatriate experience with five women from the United States who now live and work in France. (Women who have worked or continue to work stateside traveling internationally through Paris also joined the conversation.) As a research-based organization, BlackFemaleProject seeks to identify trends and commonalities for Black women at work across the globe.

Our curiosity peaked at the idea of understanding more about the Black expatriate experience in Paris, as many of us have heard that Black people experience “race” abroad differently. More specifically, historically the lives and careers of notable Black professionals have catapulted after being accepted in Paris. Returning to the states with an altered sense of the potency of Blackness in a global context.

Jasmine recounts, "Our personal and collective histories in the room as six Black women that collectively have a reach extending into many industries including beauty, fashion, film, motion graphics, management, human resources, marketing, event planning, and the list goes on. We talked about how our work is esteemed, the daily challenges we face, and the systemic complexities impacting our communities. But most importantly, we spoke about bringing honor to our professions."
