TONANTZINTLA & TLACHIHUALTEPETL

A VISIT TO CHOLULA AND PUEBLA: On our drive from Mexico City to Puebla, we stopped in the town of Cholula to visit la Iglesia de Santa María Tonanzintla. Named for the Mother Goddess Tonantzin, the Spaniards replaced her with the Virgin Mary.
STA. MARÍA DE TONANTZINTLA - CHOLULA
Puebla, founded by the Spaniards in 1531 in order to secure the trade route between Mexico City and the port of Vera Cruz, requested that the indigenous people build a church. The word and the structure were unknown to the inhabitants of the New World, as were the required angels and lions.
Construction of the church in nearby Cholula began in 1594, with the intricate stucco work beginning at the end of the 17th century and final completion of the church at the end of the 20th century. Santa María Tonantzintla is the only indigenous baroque style church not destroyed by the Spaniards.

Bedazzled. Entering the church, I immediately got goosebumps. It felt like being inside an enormous, fantastically beautiful and elaborately adorned Fabergé egg. The interior is a kaleidoscopic riot of intensely bright colors, with gilded figures of animals, flowers, birds and headdresses. Saints are both dark skinned with dark hair and dark eyes, or pale skinned with blue eyes and blonde hair. Angels are portrayed as wide-eyed babies and children with eagle wings. There are absolutely no empty spaces here.
Our driver said that even though he had visited this church many times, it was his first time inside. He was visibly moved when he told me "this makes me feel very proud of my heritage."
LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS REMEDIOS - SOBRE EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA
Eight miles from Cholula and four miles outside the city of Puebla is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as "Tlachihualtepetl," "made-by-hand mountain" in the Nahuatl language. Approaching a large hill, one sees the the very pretty terra cotta and yellow painted Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios perched on top. It is the usual way of how the Spaniards in Mexico did things - build what was sacred to themselves on top of what was sacred to others.
EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA
DENTRO/INSIDE
Inside the grass covered hill are six super mound structures that were begun in the 3rd century AD and completed in the 9th century AD. The pyramid was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl and per volume, is the largest pyramid in the world and also the largest monument in the world. The base measures 1,480 feet by 1,480 feet, with a height of 217 feet and a total volume of 16 billion cubic feet.
Covered with grass for centuries, the adventure is to go inside the pyramid, where a series of tunnels criss-cross the middle of it. At one location, one can gaze down to the first platform built in the third century AD, and from another, gaze high up to the most recently built ninth platform - completed twelve centuries ago.
