Update 3/8/20

Dear ASB Families,

I know some local schools have decided to close.  This is not the current recommendation of the CDC or King County Health Department; in fact, they continue to emphasize the negative effects non-essential school closure has on a community.  We will continue to follow their guidance and be open as long as we can to minimize disruption to student learning and routine.  Here is an article you may find helpful.  I do want to provide some updates as we head into the week:

  • Our hip hop assembly tomorrow is cancelled.  We hope to reschedule later in the year, but think it is important to minimize outside vendors coming into the school at this time.

  • Field trips are cancelled for the time being.  We will reassess as the situation develops.

  • Middle school service hours are suspended for now.  We will reassess in the coming weeks.

  • State of the School meetings are cancelled. I will be sending information regarding registration for the 2020-21 school year within the coming week.

  • After conferring with King County Health today, CYO practices with our own students and parents will continue this week. We have added a kit to the gym for coaches to sanitize equipment before, during, and after practice.  Coaches will be receiving instructions on expectations from Mr. Pouley.  Games are TBD at the discretion of CYO at this point.

It is essential families follow our illness protocol and keep students who are not healthy at home. It is also essential that parents with any illness symptoms avoid coming into the building at this time.  I am holding staff to the same expectation.

I am also asking staff to be mindful of student workload at this time.  Our main goal is that students stay healthy by getting the rest, exercise, and nutrition they need.  Families need to make the decision that is best for them.  If you have circumstances that require your student(s) to miss school, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

I will continue to update you as I have information.  I would like to ask that everyone be mindful of staying informed, staying calm, and staying respectful at this time.  As many of you saw, this article was published shortly after my email on Friday.  It is incorrect on the timing of our students’ trip to Ida Culver, and it is an important reminder that the COVID-19 situation is the center of the media right now.  Anything you choose to put online could end up in the media as a reflection of the school.  Thank you for being cognizant of this moving forward.

Stay healthy,
Kathleen
