I get a lot of emails asking me about spray equipment and how to use it to achieve the perfect finish.  First of all, I don't know if the perfect finish exists. There are so many available and you should choose the finish product based on what you want the finish to do. Next, you should pick the one that best suits your needs and has the most number of "pros" with the fewest number of "cons". If you decide that a sprayed finish is the one you want to use then you need to decide on the type of equipment. Things are already complicated when it comes to finishes but now the complication level goes up even more due to the number of options available in spray equipment.
Before going any further I recommend you contact Jeff Jewitt of Homestead Finishing Products. Jeff wrote the book on spray finishing and is a treasure chest of knowledge when it comes to finishes in general but especially sprayed finishes. He also is a luthier and understands the special needs that us luthiers have with finish work. He can help you choose the best system for the type of finish you want to use.
Here is a recent Luthier Tips du Jour video I did talking about spray equipment and in it I mention Jeff and his company. BTW, this is not a paid endorsement for Jeff or his company. In my opinion he is a great source of knowledge when it comes to finishing and the equipment needed to do that and I wanted folks to know about it.
Jeff also has a couple of online video courses available via my website on how to finish a guitar with traditional lacquer and also one on urethane finishes.
Happy Finishing!
