NHS Forest Newsletter- March 2020

@NHSForest   @SusHealthcare
We hope you are all ok in these difficult times. At the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare our offices have closed in the Covid-19 emergency, but we’re working remotely and keeping going as much as possible with all of our projects. Now that so many everyday activities are suspended, spending time in green space seems more important than ever. We're trying to get into the routine of going for a walk every lunchtime. Do please stay in touch and let us know how you’re doing. Our thoughts are especially with frontline healthcare staff.

NHS Sustainability Day @NHSForest

Help us mark NHS Sustainability Day this Thursday 19th March by sponsoring a tree in the NHS Forest. In the last year with growing awareness of the climate emergency we’ve seen the NHS Forest expand by at least 6000 trees at health sites across the UK and many more trees will be needed to meet demand when planting begins again in the autumn.

You can also take part in the 2@2 campaign - by planting 2 trees at 2pm at your site.

Please let us know of any activities your site is organising for the day and TWEET @NHSForest @SusHealthcare or SEND US YOUR PICS! More information about NHS Sustainability Day and the NHS Forest can be found here.

Trees from The Great Outdoor Gym Company

We are delighted to have received 700 trees from The Great Outdoor Gym Company, which sponsors a tree in the NHS Forest for every piece of gym equipment it sells. These will be planted at our NHS Forest sites including Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, Bethlem Royal Hospital in London and Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor. Since 2012 TGOGC has sponsored over 3900 trees!

300 Trees sponsored by Green Templeton College, Oxford

Our huge thanks to Green Templeton College in Oxford for sponsoring an amazing 300 trees in the NHS Forest! The first 100 will be planted at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford with a mix of Wild Cherry, Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Spindle, Wayfaring and Gelder trees.

Site of the month

Bethlem Royal Hospital, in Beckenham, South East London, has been part of the NHS Forest since 2010 when they rejuvenated an orchard at their site. The psychiatric hospital, part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust has recently installed an outdoor gym which has dramatically changed the way its outdoor space is used. In the secure services, patients are restricted for long periods so access to this facility has proved transformative– the new norm is to get moving on the bike or leg press. Mental health service providers have started to take patients outside at times when they are upset, anxious or angry and are using the outdoor gym to help in managing these emotions, with huge benefits for both mental and physical health.

Getting everyone to move more is a key priority in the trust's physical health strategy, and staff have noted that people who develop confidence in using the TGOGC outdoor gym whilst in hospital are more likely to use local community facilities after discharge.
