What’s happening on campuses?

Protests continue at campuses around South Africa. At Wits University students raised the issue of Wits students having no accommodation as the academic year began. University of Fort Hare students have been protesting two issues: safety and financial exclusion due to historic debt.

When then-president Jacob Zuma announced the free education plan in 2017 during the ANC national conference, there was no mention of the clearing of historic debt. This issue has affected many universities since then. Historic debt means that students are unable to apply for the new academic year due to outstanding debt and they are subsequently financially excluded.
On Monday the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) closed campuses amidst ongoing protests.
Social media was awash with rumours of “Phindile”,a student from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) who had apparently hacked in UJ’s system to give herself distinctions. However, UJ refuted the news calling it “misinformation disguised as legitimate news.”
Beyond campus news, former student leader and Fees Must Fall activist, Mcebo Dlamini was sentenced to two years and six months suspended sentence. This relates to the Fees Must Fall protests. Dlamini had previously called on the government to grant him and other FMF activists who had been arrested amnesty.

MALAYSIA: Albukhary International University Scholarship
The Albukhary International University (AIC) in Malaysia is offering undergraduate scholarships to international students who wish to study at AIC from September 2020. Applicants must be between the age of 18 and 22 years old at the time of commencing their scholarship. The applicants need to come from a low income status and must be a single marital status. UNITED STATES: Fulbright Foreign Student Program 2021-2022
The Fulbright Foreign Student Scholarship is the flagship international education exchange programme sponsored by the Government of the United States of America. The scholarship is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and other countries through educational, cultural and professional exchanges. NEW ZEALAND: Commonwealth Scholarship 2021.
The New Zealand Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), is offering full postgraduate scholarships to international students who wish to study at any of the eleven New Zealand universities and education institutions in 2021. [Deadline is March 31 2020] Find out more details here.
MAURITIUS: Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme 2020
As part of a commitment to promote capacity-building at high level across the continent, the government of Mauritius is awarding scholarships to deserving students who are resident citizens of member states of the African Union or of African Commonwealth countries for full-time, on-campus undergraduate and postgraduate programmes tenable in public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius.
