VIRTUAL SPIRIT WEEK
Hi Dolphins! This Friday is our monthly Special Spirit Day. We may not be at school, but it doesn't mean we can't have a little virtual fun! Our Lawton PTA Facebook page is public (unlike the grade-level groups), so please do not post a picture of your child's face or name in our daily spirit challenge. Our goal is to bring a little cheer to our newsfeeds while still maintaining your child's privacy. Thank you, and we miss you all!
CONNECTING WITH OTHER FAMILIES
We know parents are scrambling to figure out ways to retain connections with classmates and friends. We have several virtual communication tools at our disposal. Please use the Lawton Elementary PTA Facebook Page to keep up-to-date on general info. that applies to all students.

If you would like to connect more specifically within your grade level, a Lawton parent hosts grade-level Facebook groups. There is now a group for every grade level, including incoming kindergarten families. If you would like to join, please know that these are privately-created groups and are not monitored by the PTA. They have been ongoing since our current 4th graders were starting kindergarten. We understand that not all families are interested in joining or participating on Facebook, but this is the quickest way for us to interact with Lawton families at this time. You may always feel free to contact a PTA Board member (emails at the bottom of this newsletter) if you have a question or comment.
ART DOCENT LESSONS
Our PTA-sponsored Art Docent Program is sharing our lessons with you to try-out at home. Some of the lessons require special materials, but you can substitute with markers, crayons, or the paint that you already have in your home.

First, review the Artist Biography, and then create a piece of art in the style of that artist. Each project is divided by grade level, but it is OK to explore and find projects you are interested in for your child.

Stay well!

VIRTUAL EVENTS ALL IN ONE SPOT
With schools closed, venues all over the world are offering free tours and presentations. Local parenting magazine, "Seattle's Child," created a daily calendar of virtual events. Take a look at any time of day, and you'll find new sites to teach drawing and languages or sites to explore museums and other parts of the world.
MESSAGE FROM STATE SUPERINTENDENT
Here is a 12-minute video message from our State Superintendent Chris Reykdal discussing how our current circumstances impact students, parents, teachers, and the greater community.
SPS NUTRITION SERVICES JOB POSITIONS
Community members who want to support our students may also need extra income. School cafeterias have been short-staffed since the beginning of the school year. You can apply for a position with nutrition services at the following page. More information is listed below:
HOW TO HELP THE GREATER COMMUNITY

FOOD BANKS
Many of you have expressed interest in helping our students and greater community. The district’s nutrition services team has enough food supply to support our students at this time, but we know local food banks may be falling short. If you’re looking for ways to give back to your community, local food banks in Seattle need monetary support to help keep their shelves full for families. Please visit this page for a map of food banks in Seattle and resources on how you can help.

WRITE TO NURSING HOMES
Nursing home residents could use a boost of cheer during this time of physical isolation, so a local online news outlet started a campaign called "Letters of Hope." For a list of local nursing homes with addresses, please check out the following article.

MOOD BOOST
Families in the neighborhood are adding a teddy bear or two to a front window so that kids stuck inside or taking a walk around the block can follow the book, We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, and go on a "bear hunt."

COMMUNITY EVENTS

RED UKULELE
With all of her in-person classes cancelled, Betsy of Red Ukulele has put together a Musical Spanish with Sign Language class online with a sliding scale fee for families. Class registration can be found here at www.redukulele.com. If you have questions, please email the instructor betsy@redukulele.com.

ONE-ON-ONE BASKETBALL
In the same boat as the Spanish program, One-on-One Basketball is also reconfiguring their classes. At no charge, this group is offering up exercises and drills that kids can do alone during quarantine, and they hope this will help keep kids active an healthy. If you would like to be on their weekly workout email list, please email Stu Michie, and write "Weekly Workout" in the subject line.

*If you know of any free or low-cost online activities, feel free to send us information and a link. This may be a new way for kids to try out activities in the comfort of their own home. Thanks!
