Nothing to Fear

March 2020

“Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge.  I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.” (Psalm 57:1).

I recently heard a colleague say, “If SIM’s foundation is compromised, our mission of taking the Good News to communities where Jesus is least known will falter and, if not corrected, could eventually fail.”
She made that statement before we knew the impact that the coronavirus would have not only on our organization, but on the world at large.  In considering the possible repercussions of the COVID 19 pandemic, my friend's words have come back to me.  As the world responds and communities, families, and individuals are forced to practice “social distancing” and even quarantine, I think God may be moving us to see this not as an interruption to life and ministry, but an opportunity.
It may very well be an opportunity for us to focus on prayer, intercession, and personal spiritual growth like never before.  It could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to remember our SIM foundation which is “By Prayer” and put it into action at an individual and even global level.  There is no better time than now to remember the One we are totally reliant upon. It should make us fall on our knees if we have not already.
Keep in mind, some of us are in better situations than others, where basic necessities and good medical care are available. Others, our brothers and sisters around the world, may not have the same access to these things. In times like this we have a privilege and a duty to cry out to God on their behalf.

My friends, we are in a situation of being quite powerless and totally dependent on the One Who holds us in the palm of His hand.
There is no better place to be.

Many of our global workers are trying to decide whether to stay in their country of service or go home until the current situation improves. This is a tough decision with many variables. Please pray for them as they determine next steps and pray for us as we help them understand and navigate the implications. Pray that we will care well for our colleagues and support those who stay -either by choice or because borders have closed - in some very difficult places.

Our daughter Grace continues her studies in Korea. It does not make sense for her to come home now, she will lose 12 credit hours of intensive language study (her decision).  Every day is an exercise in trusting God and learning not to give in to fear.
It is also an exercise in patience and grace as our family of six shelters-in-place. We are coming up with some creative work-from-home and school-from-home office space solutions!

We'd love to hear from you. Let us know how you are managing and how we can pray for your family.
