ANIMAL SCIENCE

Horse Program Information- BIG CHANGES!
  • Unfortunately this year, all of the Area shows have been cancelled.
  • However, we are ACTIVELY working on a solution for youth to participate in the State Horse show regardless! Please stay tuned.
  • LINKS THAT YOU NEED
  • 4-H Intentional Riding Challenge
    • Officially launches Monday!
    • Intentional riding means you are riding with a purpose in mind.
    • We are challenging all 4-H riders to complete a 12 week, at-home riding challenge.
    • The goal is 15 rides equaling 20 hours with your project horse. This is a nice solution to continue your horsemanship journey while also staying safe.
    • To join this challenge have you or your parents follow the official facebook page HERE and 1. State your goals for you and your horse. 2. Upload conformation pictures of your horse. 3. Every time you ride upload a picture, tell us how long you've ridden for, and your most successful part of your ride.
    • We will be providing tips, patterns, and so on to help everyone in their journey.
Hippology
  • Hippology is the study of horses. That's right, a place just to geek out over equines! We will cover a myriad of topics including anatomy, physiology, behavior, equipment, management, and training.
  • Hippology is designed for youth ages 10+ and offers a state competition for youth ages 11 and up. Our meetings are mixed between classroom learning and hands-on lessons with our partnership barns, Appy Acres LLC & Kozland Farm.
  • For the time being we have moved to a virtual school format! We aim to have weekly lessons, videos, quizzes, and so on so that we can continue our learning at-home. To join the virtual class (if you haven't already) simply e-mail Ms. Kelsey.
  • The first week's materials have already been sent out :)
  • For more information about this program, contact Ms. Kelsey at 904-530-6354 or kelseymirvine@ufl.edu.
Embryology Postponed!
  • Thank you to everyone (donors and volunteers) who have supported this year's Embryology program. Unfortunately at this time we are unsure if we can continue the program for this year.
  • This also means we will not have any chicks for sale this year.
  • If anything changes we will reach out, otherwise we'll be back in 2021!

LEADERSHIP

  • We will be covering District Council ideas for how to stay engaged and active in the community using online resources.

What is County Council?
  • A group that represents the entire 4-H program and provides a link between community clubs
  • A chance for teens to exercise their leadership abilities and provide input to the county program
  • A club focused on leadership, communication, citizenship, and community service
  • County Council is open to youth ages 11-18 to grow their leadership skills. County Council is a very active club that helps organize many of the county's events as well as teach officer training.

County Events- In Person Postponed!

County Events gives 4-H'ers the chance to showcase their knowledge, talent, and skills in multiple areas including: public speaking, demonstrations, share-the-fun (talent show), photography, chef-in-training (cooking), graphic design, and fashion revue (sewing). Come show us what you can do!

Mr. Ted is working on a video platform for youth to showcase their speeches. For more information contact Mr. Ted please.

We WILL have a County Events, but still aren't sure what that looks like as of right now. Please answer the survey to have your opinion heard about how we move forward.

Host a Japanese Exchange Student

  • Interested in hosting a Japanese Exchange student this summer?
  • Japanese students will live with their host families July 21st to August 21st and will have the opportunity to improve their English language skills while immersing themselves in American culture.
  • This is a phenomenal opportunity for families to build lifelong international friendships while exposing their own children to a new culture and way of seeing the world.
  • You can host a youth between the ages of 12-18.
  • Please contact Ted Karsch tkarsch@ufl.edu to attend an informational meeting of ask any questions.
 Teach The Agent
  • Ms. Kelsey & Mr. Ted are knowledgeable about many things, but there are lots of 4-H'ers that know about topics we aren't! We are offering up a fair point opportunity to youth who can teach our agents about something.
  • The Teach the Agent sessions will need to be scheduled in advance and should last  5-15 minutes. Depending on the topic we can come to you!

You may be nominated by yourself, a 4-H volunteer or club leader, a 4-H friend or even by a community member (examples include: teachers, fair board members, etc.). A descriptive statement needs to be sent via email by your 4-H leaders to Ms. Kelsey (kelseymirvine@ufl.edu) or delivered to the Callahan Extension Office by the 20th of each month.  This statement should include why you deserve this recognition and include your current and former 4-H activities.
