While the Library is closed, make use of our online resources. Here are some of the many resources available, many of which have increased features for those facing library closures during the COVID-19 emergency.
Dear Library Members,
While we all struggle with the challenges involved with the virus outbreak, at the Orcas Island Library we’re working on every possible means of providing as many resources and services as we can, while still supporting the health of all community members.
Please be sure to explore our online options as described in this newsletter. In addition to Kanopy, we also offer our Washington Anytime Library (ebooks and e-audiobooks), plus a variety of databases and services including language learning and many other resources.
If you like to read actual books, as I do, please stay tuned for more information (I hope soon!) about the option to reserve and pick up books and other materials at a specific time each day. We would plan on quarantining materials for a specific length of time to make sure any virus is no longer viable. We’re still working out the details of how to make the work safely and as conveniently as possible. In the meantime, as your books become due, you may drop them off as usual at the many book returns about the Island, or call and be can renew them for you.
If you or a friend needs home delivery, be sure to contact us, and we will start working on options.
I should remind everyone that our WiFi network is available all around the building. If you don’t have good internet access at home, consider the Library option.
Also, many if not most of you are aware of our community drop, which we offer for people as a way to exchange items with other community members. We hope to restore this service soon too, once we work out ways of making it safe.
Unfortunately, we will need to maintain our cancellation of all meeting room use until we have more assurance about preventing community transmission of the virus.
Until April 12th, please enjoy these titles as well as all of Kanopy Kids with no credits deducted. This list will continue to grow as Kanopy connects with their content partners in the coming days. Stay tuned for more updates.
Also, the Orcas Island Library has temporarily increased patrons credits to 10 per month until the COVID-19 emergency passes. The At Home Programming Guide has the information you need to enjoy the expanded Kanopy experience.
Even while the library is closed, you can still check out seeds from the seed library. Please take a look at the seed library catalog and contact Katie Wilkins at kwilkins@orcaslibrary.org. She will happily make arrangements to get seeds to you. If you don't see what you need, check with Katie to see if she can get the seed for you through her partnerships with the Orcas Island Seed Bank and other seed saving friends. You shouldn't have to go without!

TumbleBookLibrary Premium has over 1100 titles for grades K-6, and includes our unique animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books, playlists, as well as books in Spanish and French. Plus, the collection features Graphic Novels – a student favorite!

Book Drops Around the Island - Still Open!
In addition to the book drop in front of the library, we have three more book drops conveniently located around the Island:
To the east: the Olga book drop is located at the Post Office. [NEW LOCATION - see photo above]
On the west side, in Deer Harbor: you can find the book drop in front of the Deer Harbor Community Club.
At the Orcas ferry landing: the book drop sits in front of the Cottage Gift Shop on Orcas Road.
The book drops are checked and emptied on a weekly basis.
Remote Library Card Registration
If you do not have a Library Card: while the Library is closed you can request one online. Just click on the orange button on the home page and complete the interactive form. We will contact you, and if eligible, send you a card by mail.
