Y5 and Y6 enjoyed a wonderful day in the fresh air last Tuesday at Bosworth Heritage Centre. In extraordinary times it was fantastic to be transported back to 22nd August 1485. We all learnt something new and I would encourage you to visit the site once life returns to normal in the U.K. There are some Key Stage 1 and 2 learning activities on the website. https://www.bosworthbattlefield.org.uk
The children had fun, laughed and thoroughly enjoyed the experience together. For those unable to join us, please look at the website and I am sure you will get an opportunity to visit another day.
In the light of the government announcements last Wednesday, we remain open next week for children of Keyworkers and vulnerable children. My colleagues will be teaching on line and face to face; and do the very best they can to support everyone.
Today is International day of happiness. Hard to believe in such extraordinary times. We must remember that as human beings we must look after and care for one another.
I leave you with some pictures of Spring and the sun rising over Bondi beach. Through all the darkness we need to focus on some positives. The sun will rise everyday and spring is coming. We will I know be back together very soon. We are all really going to miss the children.
Enjoy the weekend.

We hope to continue with the newsletter over the next few weeks and would love to use it as a way of bringing us all together whilst we are in our separate locations! If you have any photos, write ups, interesting facts, or news of things you have been learning, doing, then we would love to know!! Perhaps a video or photo of you playing games, doing a workout, walking the dog. Perhaps a quiz that you have come up with that you would like to share with others?
If you have something that you would like to share please email it to jane.thompson@iesmail.com
This week classes 5 and 6 travelled to Bosworth to the area where the Battle of Bosworth took place in 1485.
The children (and Mr Tranter and Miss Belosova) enjoyed the workshop on what life was like for a Tudor soldier. Learning to fight in a group using a billhook and how to bring down knights on horseback. Also trying to fire a bow like an archer (which looks a lot easier than it is).
The children also enjoyed becoming history detectives and learning how archeologists use items from the past to help piece what happened together.
Finally, the children enjoyed a walk around the battlefield. Seeing the key areas where the men of both the Lancastrians and Yorkists fought really brought to life what it must have been like to have been there.
A really enjoyable and informative day, which all the children will remember!
This week class 5 performed their eagerly anticipated class assembly. The children were fantastic and the audience thoroughly enjoyed the play. All the children played their parts excellently and certainly made their teacher very proud. A big thank you goes out to all those who played a part: Mrs Dickinson, Parents and most importantly the children themselves.
I have just finished reading Shadowsea by Peter Bunzl. This is the 4th book in a set that start with the more well known Cogheart. We are transported back to a Victorian Steampunk era where lots of new inventions are being created, lots are clockwork or steam powered; it has a taste of reality hidden in a beautifully created fantasy world that is essentially still a good vs evil battle. In each book there are wonderful adventures and terrifying life-threatening situations; we do get a happy ending, but also several unanswered questions, that keep us gripped through the next installment.
The blurb online tells us of "bright hustle and bustle of New York...shadowy secrets ...chilling goings-on...an undersea mystery; and a revengeful villain with a treacherous plan." I don't want to give too much away; all I can say is pick up Cogheart and get reading!!
I have been championing these books for the past year with Year 6. I recommend them to anyone - though probably more suited to Year 4 upwards.
Class One have been busy over the last few weeks, preparing and constructing individual projects which could be presented to the class. Some children chose to use the PowerPoint format, whilst others called upon their artistic skills to collate lots of fun and useful information. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch and learn! Super work everyone. See you all soon. Love Mrs Bell x
It has been a strange ending to our Spring Term of competitive sport with everything being cancelled until who knows when. Some good news to keep our spirits up is that I received notice that as a result of winning the Grantham and District Swimming competition, we have qualified to take part in the County Competition which is scheduled for early July. We will keep our fingers crossed that we will be able to still take part in this competition. In the mean time look out for our suggestions to keep active over this period of absence especially for the JOE WICKS fitness videos being streamed every morning at 9.00am on the "You Tube" channel. This could be a great way for us all to start our day as families, individuals and staff who are working over the next few weeks. Keep safe but try to be active outdoors as much as you can everyone everyday.

Inter House Swimming Gala
This week we all had great fun taking part in one of the last sports fixtures on the calendar for this term - The Inter House Swimming Gala. With all the distractions of the current climate it was great to escape in some good old fashioned competition and fun in the pool. The crowds understandably stayed away and for those who did venture out observed a sensible social distancing while trying to create an uplifting atmosphere. Up until the final relay races the competition was fierce and extremely close with only a few points separating the three Houses. At the end of the 6 relay races the final result was !st Newton 257 points, 2nd Brownlow 242 points and 3rd Hornsby 202 points. Congratulations to all our swimmers, parents and colleagues who helped to stage the event and make it a fun afternoon.
The MYP 2 students studied aesthetics across different cultures, and created upcycled masks from a variety of used materials. The global issue of sustainability was addressed through this unit as well.
The MYP 3 students have been exploring visual communication and developing their abstract thinking and conceptual skills through a variety of formative tasks, such as the Doodle for Google exercise that required visual ways of communicating a theme.
Our DP students are focusing on their exhibition and we look forward to seeing all their work when they mount their final exhibition later this year.

Lengthen, Outspoken, Abandon... Bingo!
Playing games in the classroom help to keep students engaged and involved in their learning because they can enjoy and learn at the same time. Since the beginning of the school year, they have been practicing and getting familiar with spelling words by playing Bingo. This has been a fun way to review frequently misspelled words. This is how Bingo is played: the teacher reads the words, and later the students want to do it themselves, too because they feel confident enough. When a student gets a row or Bingo, that student must stand up and spell out all the words correctly. They get small prizes every time they play!
As a sixth grade English Teacher, I hope one of my students will be able to win the Spelling Bee!
