Using Social Media: Advantages, Disadvantages, and Challenges
March 28, 2020 - 1:00 p.m – 2:00 p.m. EDT

Amy Macleod, RD Alberta, will be hosting a Webinar focusing on effectively utilizing Social Media:

Thinking of using Social Media for your Club but don't know where to start? Or have you started a Social Media account for your Club but don't know what to post? Then this webinar is for you! Social Media is a valuable part of your Club's communication plan. Posting to the wider world about your Club mission, activities, and accomplishments will spread the word and can help attract people in joining your Club. CFUW has a niche that is appealing and sought out by women and girls. You will be introduced to the various Social Media platforms you can use, how to use them effectively to reach various demographics, and how to meet the challenges that come with managing Social Media for your Club.

To join the webinar, click here for the meeting link and number and follow the instructions. Please send an RSVP to Rachel at cfuwgen@rogers.com.
Online and Telephone Conferencing Options

Amidst the Covid-19 situation, we understand that many Clubs will have to cancel scheduled events and meetings. While this is the case, we know how important it is to stay connected during a difficult time like this.

With that being said, CFUW National Office will be offering resources for members so that you can still host meetings online and through the phone. We will be offering these services free of charge. The 2 options we will be offering are:

1. Zoom. What is Zoom? Zoom is a Video Communications platform that offers remote video conferencing services to groups of people looking to meet. To learn more about the system, click here. Zoom also offers free tutorials for beginners. We currently only have the capacity to have 1 host at a time, meaning that we will allow you to schedule your desired meeting times on a first come, first serve basis.

If this is something you are interested in using contact Rachel at cfuwgen@rogers.com to help you get set up. Rachel will be happy to help with any training or to answer any questions that you may have!

2. Pragmatic Teleconferencing: What is Pragmatic? Pragmatic allows you to host telephone meetings with many different members, simply by dialing in with your phone using the codes provided. Please note that due to the influx of people working from home, Pragmatic has released a statement that the Canadian telecom networks are having a difficult time with capacity in regards to the increased call volumes. If you wish to use this service they recommend:

“Given the circumstances, and to further increase success of your calls, here are some tips to help ensure important calls are successful:
  1. Schedule calls at non-peak times (ie. 11:20am versus 11:00am)
  2. Schedule calls earlier the morning (ie. 8am)
  3. Schedule calls later in the day (ie. 4pm onward)”

If you are interested in using pragmatic, contact Rachel at cfuwgen@rogers.com and she will provide you with setup instructions and dial-in numbers along with any troubleshooting.

Grace Hollett, CFUW National President
March 20, 2020

Hello Members,

Now that we have changed the Ottawa in-person AGM to a virtual AGM we will hold our scheduled Club Presidents Networking session virtually on Wednesday, March 25, and  Thursday March 26 with sessions offered from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m EDT and 2:00-4:00 p.m. EDT each day. You will be asked to register for one session only, choosing whichever time works best for you. The agenda will be forwarded on Monday, March 23, and the main topic will be how Clubs are managing their Club programs and fund-raising activities and how the CFUW office can assist.

I hope all members of Clubs are adjusting to the new reality of Canadian life during a pandemic and are staying safe during this challenging time. Our CFUW members  who are in the work force are either continuing there very carefully, or are working from home. For an organization that prides itself on social interaction and advocacy the practice of social distancing is quite a change for us, but CFUW members have a strong sense of social responsibility and we do what has to be done.

Many of us have family and friends attempting to return to Canada, children and grandchildren at home whose studies have now gone online, or whose place of work has closed resulting in some of them working online. I have been pleased with the strong thoughtful reaction of the Federal and Provincial Governments to the needs of Canadians who are being most negatively affected by the pandemic. As an advocate for education we are particularly concerned about students whose studies at post -secondary institutions and at the K-12 level are being interrupted. CFUW awaits Departments of Education and School Boards announcing and operationalizing  creative effective solutions to assist those students.

In the meantime, our partner UNESCO has posted a list of educational applications and platforms to help parents, teachers, schools and school systems facilitate student learning and provide social caring and interaction during periods of school closure. Most of the solutions are free and several support multiple languages.

Please keep safe during this challenging time and keep in contact with each other “virtually”!
