Applications for CRUK Major Centre PhD training schemes are now open
Project title: Development of a 3D in vitro lung cancer model to track genetic instability
This interdisciplinary project will utilise a variety of material science and biological approaches to create an improved in vitro lung tumourigenesis model that can be used for therapeutic pre-clinical testing and biological mechanistic study. The projects overall goal will be to build an in vitro 3D tissue engineered model that closely mimics human lung tissue. This model can then act as test bed for understanding how different factors can initiate cancer in the lung.
Applications are to be made via The University of Manchester application portal.

CiC Target Product Profile (TPP - short form) workshop
The UoM MRC funded Confidence in Concept (CiC) pump-priming scheme for early translational proof-of-concept (PoC) studies is forecasted to open in late March 2020 with a deadline for Expressions of Interest on 1st May 2020. The CiC2020 application process will include a short Target Product Profile (TPP) form where we ask investigators to describe the end product.
This workshop consists of one hour of presentations followed by 30mins 1-2-1 advice sessions with an industry expert. Please note that 121s require completion of a short TPP form prior to the event and are allocated on a first-come-first-serve basis.
TPP advice can support studies at different stages of the translational pathway including projects that are ready for CiC or DPFS funding.
Our industry experts are:
• Dr Graeme Wilkinson, Head of virtual R&D, Medicines Discovery Catapult
• Dr Martino Picardo, Independent Consultant specialising in business start-up in Life Sciences (former UMIP entrepreneur-in-residence)

Updates from The Henry Royce Institute
COVID-19 - UK Critical Equipment Supply Chain Survey to Support the NHS

Hospital trusts in the UK are facing increasing shortages of critical equipment including personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory apparatus.

The Henry Royce Institute, as the national institute for advanced materials research and innovation, has been contacted by NHS hospital trusts requesting assistance in engineering and manufacturing these items to aid their response, including:

  • Rapid provision of equipment parts associated with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by 3D printing/additive manufacturing to Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) standards under emergency humanitarian provision regulation.
  • Advice or expertise on reverse engineering components such as oxygen flow valves for respiration aids and adaptors to allow non-clinical respirator masks to be used to provide positive air pressure breathing support (C-PAP).

Royce intends to set up and manage a database to simplify and expedite access for the NHS to design and manufacturing capabilities across the UK. As such, we are launching two surveys for:

  • Those registering design and/or manufacturing facilities and resources in the UK that they wish to make available to the NHSCLICK HERE.
  • Those requiring access to design and/or manufacturing facilities to produce parts for critical equipment for the NHSCLICK HERE.

We are aiming to match suitable resources with local needs and are also interested in hearing about ongoing projects associated with the design and manufacture of equipment for the NHS which we could support through this project.

Please share this widely and encourage those with resources or a need to complete these surveys.

The Royce has some online training courses available to PhD students delivered by the National Physical Laboratory on ‘Introduction to Metrology’ and ‘Introduction to Measurement Uncertainty’ available to PhD students. Application for the course can be made via the Royce website.
