A Note from Jen's Dining Room Table aka Her New Home Office

Like many of you, there are personal and professional adjustments being made daily. Today I sit here at my dining room table, sharing wifi with my 4 children and trying to avoid the lure of the kitchen pantry where the snacks hide. May you be graced with more willpower than I when it comes to the second part! Please know that I am thinking daily about all of you; your dedication during these times of change, your mental and physical well-being, and that of your family, friends and students. Be well and please reach out with ideas on how the GLOBE Partners and the U.S. GLOBE Office can help you #doGLOBE!

Student Research Symposia:

The last communication we sent through MailChimp was about opening registration for the GLOBE Student Research Symposium and a short statement to let you know that we were watching the COVID-19 situation. How things have changed in only 11 days! The SRS leadership met Wednesday and acknowledged that it would not be feasible to hold these events this spring. I am sure that many of you are not surprised.

We started to discuss virtual options or other ways that students could share their GLOBE research if they missed the International Virtual Science Symposium (IVSS) deadline. We also discussed postponing the SRS to the fall as several sites and regional leads were open to a delay, rather than a complete cancellation for the 2019-2020 school year. If you have a minute, the team would appreciate hearing from you.  These two pieces of information (with no obligation of course, as we know how things can change in 24 hours even) will be extremely helpful in calculating our next steps.

Please send me a quick email reply letting me know:
(1) if you would be willing and able to attend a fall SRS (October or November 2020) with your students or not; and,
(2) if your students have the resources to continue their research and submit a poster to the GLOBE website with an SRS tag.

I want to share that one of the goals of the SRS is making them accessible to everyone. This is why the majority of the budget goes to supporting under-resourced schools to travel to in-person events where they meet and talk with STEM professionals. I feel very strongly that that experience is what sets our events apart and why they have such an impact on students. Simply, there is no replacement and we are committed to continuing the SRS in future years.

With my best wishes for good health and smooth transitions,
Jen
