We all sometimes feel overwhelmed, frustrated, anxious or angry. Thankfully there are some quick and easy exercises that can help acknowledge those feelings, without letting them ruin your day.

Favorite Mindful Exercises from SWEAP's Counselors

5-1 Mindfulness.  An easy one!  If you are unable to focus because of distracting thoughts try counting down through your senses.
  • Name 5 things you can see...
  • 4 things you can touch...
  • 3 things you can hear...
  • 2 things you can smell (or like the smell of)...
  • and 1 positive statement about yourself or about the situation.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation. When we are managing a lot, we often hold much more tension in our bodies than we realize.  Taking time each day to stretch, unwind, and loosen up some of those tense areas can have an overall positive effect on our moods, reduce snap reactions, and builds in a few minutes of peace you can count on.

Gratitude Lists. In times of high tension and uncertainty it can be harder to remember things we can be grateful for.  Make some lists you can keep in your phone, wallet or purse of things you are grateful for.  In times of need, review those things and zone in on your favorite memory or reasons that item made your list.

Involve those around you.  Whether you are in person or on the phone, all of these exercises can be done on your own or with others.  Another small way to offer and receive support from those you care about.

Sometimes one topic dominates the dinner table conversation, especially if it is something on everybody's mind.  But it can be helpful to switch up the pattern and focus on more positive and interesting topics.

We will be posting Questions of the Day to our Facebook Page for the remainder of social distancing protocols, so go like our page and follow our posts to give you some easy suggestions for your dinner table conversations.
Here are some starter questions to try...

What would you put in a family time capsule to be opened in 100 years?

Is there anything in your family that has been passed down from generation to generation?

What is the most recent compliment you received from a family member?

Tell me about a time when you stayed up really late or had an adventure with friends?

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

What is your favorite way to help others?
