Dear High School of Business Teachers:

Yesterday, Stephanie and I met with the HSB Teacher Advisory Council to discuss how we can support you as you teach HSB courses online. Here are some things we learned:

  • Most states and districts across the country have implemented similar policies requiring instruction to continue in an online environment.
  • The HSB TAC members are using/planning to use the resources in the MBA Learning Center (Canvas) extensively. If you do not feel comfortable using the LC, please review the email you received from Stephanie a few days ago. We have written, video, email, and phone assistance available to you. And don't forget: there is a pdf of the entire LAP within each LAP module to give you a way to access LAPs without having your students use their accounts.
  • PI-focused videos. TAC tell us schools are requiring teachers to record short lecture videos. This is an opportunity for HSB Teachers to support each other. On the wiki, we have added a table for each project. The table rows begin with a Performance Indicator. The next row is for you to volunteer to make a lecture video on that PI. The last column is to post the link to that video. Since you are all teaching the same courses, this is a great way to divide and conquer these videos! Please go to the wiki now, select the page for a course you are currently teaching, and sign up to record a video. TAC recommends Screen Castify, but you are welcome to use anything, including your phone. Please participate. You are all excellent teachers, and this isn't a time to wait for others to fill the slots.
  • Business connections/presentations/guest speakers. With companies across the U.S. conducting business online during the pandemic, meeting online is a necessity for all. Here is what TAC suggests for your classes:
    • Contact your local business partners and ask them to meet online with your class via Zoom, Google Hangouts, Google Meet. The business may have an account for other paid systems, such as GoToMeeting or WebEx. Or, if meeting live isn't an option, ask them to record a presentation using their mobile device or other system.
  • Videos created by business professionals. A table on the Wiki's Tech Tools and Tips page has been created for sharing videos created by business professionals.
    • We are reaching out to our network of business execs (ExecNet) and asking them to record short videos discussing what their companies are doing to stay operational (or not) during this time.
    • Please share videos created by your business partners (with their permission, of course) to the wiki.
    • You can also share other tech resources there. For example, we recommend this article on PBL remote learning from PBLWorks.
  • Course-specific advice. TAC also discussed course and project-specific workarounds for the courses most of you are likely teaching now.
    • Business Econ
      • Have You Had Enough?
        • There is a LAP for the law of diminishing returns.
        • Have small groups of students use FaceTime or other online videoconferencing to eat candy, etc.
      • Good Ol' Days
        • The timeline tool recommended in the course guide, Tiki Toki, is online, so students can continue to use that.
        • Ask students if they have recommendations for creating videos without getting together.
    • Prin of Finance. TAC recommends using BetterInvesting and the SSG.  Provide a video or written lecture on each section of instruction. Again, use the wiki to share these.
    • Business Strategies. This one depends on students’ business. Start by discussing with them how they might handle if it were their personal business. Online discussions may be key for each performance indicator.

Please share other ideas on the wiki or with us.
