Two Senators accused of selling significant stock holdings before coronavirus market crash

  • Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) is reported to have sold between $628,000 and $1.72 million of his stock holdings before the stock market’s steep decline over the last month. Burr, who is the Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman, also warned a VIP group of constituents of the impending economic impact of the coronavirus
  • Senator Kelly Loeffler (R-GA) has also been accused of insider trading after selling off more than a million dollars in stocks before the stock market nosedive and buying stocks on Feb. 14 for two work-from-home-related companies. She has denied the claims of insider trading, stating that her portfolio is handled by a third-party

Most renters will not be eligible for eviction protections

  • The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s plan includes a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures that applies to homeowners who have Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loans or loans backed by the FHA
  • However, this moratorium would apply to 8 million rental units of the total 43 million households rented in 2019. Those who rent from a business or or are renters in public housing authorities are not protected by the plan

ECONOMY 📈

The deadline for filing federal tax returns is postponed to July 15

  • The deadline was announced by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin after complaints about the administration’s previous plan to give people an additional 90 days to pay the IRS, without penalties or interest, but still required returns to be filed by April 15
  • There had been concerns that people wouldn’t be able to gather the necessary documents or access services like those offered by Volunteer Income Tax Assistance clinics
  • Several states have pushed back their filing dates for state taxes as well
