Inviting all people to grow into a Christ-centered life in God's family
Good Shepherd

What a wild and wearying week we find ourselves in, amidst the fear of the COVID-19 pandemic. As such, we turn our attention to the wind and the waves experienced by Jesus and His first disciples on the Sea of Galilee in Mark 4.35-41

In his book Subversive Sabbath, A.J. Swoboda writes, "I find it interesting that Jesus sleeps a good deal in the Gospels. But Jesus's rhythms of sleep are unlike anyone else's. Jesus is always sleeping when everyone else is awake and always seems to be awake when everyone else is sleeping. On the boat in the storm, Jesus sleeps as his disciples sweat with fear. At Gethsemane, Jesus is away, sweating blood in prayer, while his disciples cannot keep their eyes open. Indeed, Jesus' life was marked by a unique rhythm of rest that seemed disjointed from his own disciples' rhythm and was certainly different from the world's. But that sleep showed Jesus' deep sense of trust in His Father. Even storms did not unsettle his sleep rhythms."

May this week's study guide help us trust in this Jesus, within the wind and waves of our own anxiety. May we find faith in Him in the midst of our fear. Download it in PDF or Microsoft Word.

We will again offer an online worship opportunity this Sunday morning. Stay tuned to your email for more details. And be sure you're subscribed to that list here: gdshp.ch/emaillist
