You can be rich in spirit, kindness, love and all those things that you can't put a dollar sign on. ~ Dolly Parton

At a time when we’ve seen some unfortunate aspects of human nature on display, e.g. unnecessary stockpiling and even fighting over toilet paper, I thought it might be nice this week to remind ourselves of the more positive aspects, lest we forget them.

We’re also seeing a lot of generosity, kindness and compassion on display and nowhere more so than in hospitals and amongst other professionals who are in the front line of the Cover-19 or coronavirus. However, as a community, we can all do our bit to show some kindness

It turns out that kindness is not just good for those receiving it, but also good for those who give or display it. It’s nice to be kind and it’s nice to be on the receiving end of an act of kindness. It makes everyone feel better.

Here are some of the potential benefits of being kind that scientists have discovered:

  • It can make you happier
  • It can alleviate depression
  • It can improve your relationships
  • It’s good for your heart
  • It’s good for your immune system
  • It can help you live longer!

I’d say it’s worth giving it a try…

Dr David Hamilton

I first met David when he joined me as a guest trainer on an NLP Practitioner programme in Scotland around 10 years ago. He is a truly remarkable human being! He is the author of several well-researched books on the mind and body.

I can highly recommend his book “Why Kindness is Good for You”. If you’d like to learn about the science of kindness and read many beautiful stories, case studies and examples of how kindness has made a big difference in people’s lives then it’s worth buying it. Also, he includes many exercises and tips on how to be kinder, including his 21-Day Kindness Challenge and Fifty Acts of Kindness.

Now, what could be better than that?!

Early in the book David highlights one type of kindness that we should never forget - kindness towards ourselves. In fact, this is probably a good place to start!

In your kindness, please also remember the victims of the Brussels bombings this weekend. It’s now four years since this other tragedy struck that really tested our local resolve here in Belgium.

Be kind this week…

Gerry

Did you hear about the claustrophobic astronaut?
He just needed a little space.

Why don’t scientists trust atoms?
Because they make up everything.

A man tells his doctor, “Doc, help me. I’m addicted to Twitter!”
The doctor replies, “Sorry, I don’t follow you…”

What breed of dog can jump higher than buildings?
Any dog, because buildings can’t jump.
