Mayor Bowser Extends Modified District Operating Status

Mayor Bowser has extended the District's modified operating status until April 27th.  We are still working to fully understand the implications of this decision for children and youth, and welcome your input, questions or concerns.

The Mayor's full announcement (made Friday afternoon) can be found below. Additional, specific details about what this means for DC public schools and meal sites can be found below.

Full Statement

DC Public Schools (DCPS)

DCPS facilities will remain closed and distance learning will take place through Friday, April 24. At this time, classes are scheduled to resume on Monday, April 27. The District’s charter school operators are expected to follow DCPS’ operating status.

Distance Learning

With the extension of distance learning, schools will continue to implement consistent methods to deliver instruction remotely to students in ELA and Math. District Government will work with schools to address challenges where they exist and develop engagement and submission mechanisms to increase the demands of online learning.

Assessments

Due to the extended school closures, OSSE plans to seek a one-year waiver from federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requirements around assessments, and will cancel statewide summative assessments for students, including Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and DC Science.

Meal Sites

Beginning April 1, the District will add 10 meal sites for all students, bringing the total meal sites at DCPS buildings to 29 across the District. These sites serve lunch and a shelf-stable breakfast for all residents under the age of 18 Monday-Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

A full list of meal sites (for children and seniors) can be found on coronavirus.dc.gov/mealsites

Opportunities for Action

Non-Profit Survey: The Impact of COVID-19

Our good friends at The DC Policy Center are are launching a very short survey to guide their research on how COVID-19 is affecting nonprofits in the D.C. area—and they need your help.

What you share with through this survey will help the District and its policymakers make decisions that best meet the needs of our local nonprofit community.

Please take 2 minutes (literally) and help inform how we support nonprofits and the folks who rely on our services during this public health emergency.

DC Government Meal Sites: Students & Seniors
Our littlest residents and seniors aren't the only folks who may struggle with food access during the course of this crisis. The incredible folks at the DC Food Project have compiled a fantastic resource list. We encourage you to share widely. Their website also includes the DCPS and Charter feeding sites in both list and map form.
