Organic On The Front Line Of California’s Climate Resilience
By Nora Goldstein
After an exhaustive examination of 30 years of peer-reviewed science, California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) released its first-ever policy plan, “Roadmap to an Organic California: Policy Report,” on February 18. “This is a first-of-its-kind research project that investigates how organic is a solution to California’s toughest challenges,” explains Laetitia Benador, a Research Fellow at CCOF and lead researcher for the Roadmap project. “The policy report provides concrete next steps to develop organic to secure our future.”

Hail To The Trees …
And The Biosolids
Tree plantations and temperate forests both rank high on the Drawdown list (#13 and #14) with high potential to store large amounts of carbon.  Tree plantations on degraded land covered 294 million hectares globally in 2018 or about 726.5 million acres (1 hectare = 2.47 acres).  Increasing that acreage by 112 to 174 million hectares would sequester an additional 22.2 to 35.9 gigatons (1 gigaton = 1 billion tons) of CO2 by 2050.  Doing so would also mean less deforestation.  The money spent to do so ($164-$260 billion) would be a distant memory when considering the profits ($2.1-$3.4 trillion).

COVID-19 Resources For Organics Recycling Operations

Ireland’s Cré, the Mid-Atlantic Biosolids Association (MABA), and the US Composting Council (USCC) provided their members with links to valuable guidance for managers and employees of composting and anaerobic digestion facilities, wastewater treatment plants, and biosolids recycling programs. We’ve compiled them for easy access …
Biomethane Pathway
To 2030
“Time and time again, prominent organizations with the ear of our government have highlighted biomethane’s vital role in the [current] decade of decarbonization. While the UK’s net zero goal is suitably ambitious, it cannot be achieved without immediate and significant investment in sustainable technologies, such as anaerobic digestion (AD). It is, as the Committee on Climate Change says, a no-regrets option.”
— Charlotte Morton, Chief Executive of the United Kingdom’s Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA)
ISWA Global Assessment Of
Municipal Organics
The International Solid Waste Association’s Working Group on the Biological Treatment of Waste (WGBTW) released the Global Assessment Of Municipal Organic Waste Production And Recycling in mid-March, authored by Marco Ricci-Jürgensen, Jane Gilbert and Aditi Ramola. The report summarizes global estimates of the amount of organic solid wastes produced — principally from municipal origin — and separately collected (source segregated) and treated through a composting and/or anaerobic digestion process.

Net Present Value Of Composting Expenditures
By Craig Coker
One method of comparing alternatives such as site development costs for one site versus another, or for one model of specific equipment versus another, is to compute the Net Present Value (NPV) of each alternative over the expected life of the alternatives.  To keep the math simpler, I normally use a 10-year economic life. These analyses are relatively simple with an Excel spreadsheet.
