Staying Healthy and Protecting Others

EXERCISE, WHEN DONE PROPERLY, IS PROVEN TO BOOST HEALTH; even doing just a few minutes of exercise every day can strengthen the immune system, improve brain function, reverse the effects of aging in the heart, and may even improve your memory. Exercise can also be positive influence on mental health.
*  If you choose to exercise at a gym, be under no illusion. These are places where germs and bacteria of all kinds can thrive. New research suggests that the virus can live on certain surfaces, such as plastic and stainless steel, for up to 9 days
*  In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic exercising outdoors is by far the safest option.

Capital Nordic Walking takes your health and safety seriously
The good health and wellness of our Coaches and our Nordic Walking Community is our top priority - including during this time when staying healthy with robust immune systems is even more important.  We practice good hygiene and are being extra vigilant with our practices during this time of high risk in line with the World Health Organisation and Australian Government guidelines, including:
  • Washing our hands regularly and using and making hand sanitisers available to clients
  • Proactively using wipes to disinfect equipment after every use
  • Avoiding skin contact
  • Remaining at a safe distance during lessons and group walks
  • Modelling best hygiene practice and reminding others of what to do
  • Encouraging people to reconsider spending time in busy spaces such as cafes after group walks
  • Isolating ourselves and seeking medical attention if we feel unwell
  • Requesting that our Nordic Walking clients inform us if they feel that they might be at risk - either experiencing flu symptoms themselves or having been in contact with someone who could be infected
  • Cancelling lessons or group walks if we are aware of any risk to our Nordic Walking Community or our Coaches

Do I really need lessons to Nordic Walk?!
Absolutely! If you really want to develop a great Nordic Walk technique and get the maximum benefits. The truth is that you don’t need lessons to walk with poles! Anyone can buy a pair of poles and start walking with them. Whether they are doing it correctly is another thing. It’s a bit like golf and tennis that way. And like golf and tennis, if you want to do it well, avoid getting injuries and get the maximum benefits, it’s a good idea to get lessons from a qualified and experienced Nordic Walking Instructor.  All proficient Nordic Walkers will tell you that it is quite a bit more technical than meets the eye!
How Nordic Walking helped Sandra beat her Blood Pressure!
I was first diagnosed with high blood pressure in my mid 50s and put on medication. Over time my blood pressure continued to rise and even with an increase in medication, it remained very high.

In June 2019 I started Nordic Walking three times a week on a regular basis. When I first started, I was very unfit but with time and perseverance I gradually became stronger and found I could walk further and for longer. The biggest bonus of Nordic Walking has been the effect it has had on my blood pressure.

While my medication has remained the same, my blood pressure is now consistently within normal range, but only as long as I keep Nordic Walking.

In September I completed a 7km hike through the Lousios Gorge to the Prodromou Monastery in Greece, something I would never have contemplated or have managed before I took up Nordic Walking.

Thank you for introducing NW to Canberra, for your ongoing encouragement and support and for all the fun group activities.

I just love it!

Exercise & High Blood Pressure - Yay or Nay?

Definitely Yay! As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Capital Nordic Walking Coach, Jacinta Greenwood, often comes across clients who are nervous about exercise due to them having high blood pressure.

In fact, as long as your blood pressure is under control as per your doctors instructions, then one of the best long term effects of exercise is that it lowers blood pressure.
As you exercise, your blood pressure will temporarily rise due to the increased demand on your heart to provide your muscles with oxygen, blood and nutrients. This in turn triggers your blood vessels to become dilated to enable quick transport to the muscles.  Following exercise, your blood pressure will return to normal fairly quickly, and if you repeatedly undergo this process, then it helps the blood vessels maintain or improve their elasticity which leads to decreased overall blood pressure
Capital Nordic Walking is pleased to announce that we are included on the Breast Cancer Australia Network's Service Provider list
Exercise can add to the health and well-being of people living with cancer. Did you know that a combination of aerobic and resistance exercise during and after breast cancer chemotherapy may result in better long-term patient-reported outcomes compared to aerobic alone?
