Hi there.

How are you?

We hope you're well, and at home, and spending quality time with your loved ones. In times like this, we are further reminded of the deep interconnectedness and inherent social nature of our human species and of how our little community supports one another.

Some of us are out of work right now. Some have to work remotely AND help out around the house with kids home from school. Some are over 60 and/or immunocompromised and frightened of contracting this virus. This can all be tough at times, rewarding at other times, and we understand that.

Communities - and our planet - are made healthier when individual steps benefit the greater good, when individual actions make a collective impact. Whether in the form of social distancing instead of a night out, or riding your bike instead of making a short drive, our individual actions today result in tangible benefits to the greater whole tomorrow. Please, take care of yourself so that you can take care of others.

If it isn’t painfully obvious already, we won’t be hosting a public coalition meeting at Ludwick or any other place this Thursday. You probably didn’t even need this email to know that.

In lieu of our regularly scheduled programming, we do want to host a meeting via our fancy new Zoom account, and we want to do this for a few reasons:

1. Connection matters. Faces matter. Community matters.
We want to connect with you, to see how you’re doing, to give you a chance to request help if needed and to offer help if and when you are able. Let’s embrace our shared humanity, our empathy, and our compassion in the face of an invisible enemy and come out of it stronger, bolder, and braver!

Click on this Zoom link from any device to join the call a little before 6:30 pm on Thursday, March 19th.

2. And ACTION still matters: April 7th: Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings
There is still a vote planned for a critical City of SLO policy, and we need your help supporting the SLO City Council in passing the Clean Energy Choice Program For New Buildings helping to incentivize new buildings within the city to be constructed via renewable energy and devoid of fossil fuels. As we all did in September of last year, please email council to express your support today

Read this for why you will want to buy an all-electric home or electrify your home and why this is a good city policy

Read this for why developers and building pros will want to build all-electric homes and why they’re better

Some things you can do while you’re all cooped up:

  • Opt-UP to “MBCP Prime” 100% renewable power. It’s $0.008 more per kWh and approximately counteracts the discount you get from being on Community Choice energy. Translation: your bill will be about the same as before but now with ALL wind and solar power!
  • Like us on Facebook where we have more regular updates on our programs. This email list is used less frequently than our FB page.
  • Email the city council to support the Clean Energy Choice Program for New Buildings
  • Read this interesting take on why a global pandemic gets an emergency response while the climate crisis doesn’t.

The SLO Climate Coalition has restructured our organization in a big way
Our "Task Force" has become a "Leadership Team" and our initiatives, starting in 2020 are up to YOU. yes, YOU.

If you have a project idea that will help reduce carbon emissions in SLO or SLO County... or support another one of our strategic initiatives, stay tuned. We will soon have an easy process for your idea to become a reality.

Check out the presentation we gave at our January 16th meeting (especially page 12 and 13). In there, you'll find our new structure and vision for the future!
