What's happening in March?

Deaf History Month

The celebration of Deaf History Month is not like the average month-long holiday. The month that is dedicated to raising awareness for those who are hard of hearing, or deaf, actually begins on March 13th and goes through April 15th. These particular dates were chosen to reflect important events within the deaf community. On March 13th, 1988, the very first deaf president was named at Gallaudet University, a school for the deaf. Also, on April 15th, 1817, the first American school for the deaf was opened in Hartford, Connecticut. The presence of these schools encouraged and gave many individuals the opportunity to pursue a higher education. The deaf community actively seeks to inform others about their abilities and struggles and the months of March and April only heighten their mission.

Make Up Your Own Holiday Day!

Ever wish you could celebrate an entire day dedicated to a specific type of food, planting a flower, your dog, or maybe even your favorite movie? Well, this Thursday, you can! Every year on March 26th, a very interesting holiday is celebrated in countless ways. Make Up Your Own Holiday Day, unlike most traditional holidays, does not have any religious ties, or detailed history, but is simply meant to bring joy to those who choose to celebrate something. On this day, people are encouraged to share that thing that makes them happy with others. People can decide if they want to utilize this day to raise awareness about an issue they're passionate about, or simply honor their favorite color. Whether you want to celebrate your very own Purple Day, Spaghetti Day, or possibly Curly Hair Day, make sure to get creative and have fun!
