Vis Clinic Immune Thoughts

 
     
   As always, the wellbeing of you and your family is our highest priority at VIS CLINIC. We continue to follow and apply health and safety regulations, regardless of season or sickness. This is how we ensure that our practice members can trust us, not only for functional medicine, nutrition and chiropractic care, but for the office environment.
The Corona Virus COVID19 is a very survivable virus of which most will only get symptoms of the common cold.  Those at higher risk of complications are those individuals with other comorbidities especially of the upper respiratory system such as COPD and Asthma. Individuals with compromised immunity are also at higher risk such as diabetics, individuals on chemotherapies and steroids for cancer or autoimmunity or those with organ transplants.  The elderly are also at higher risk due to the lower vitality of their antioxidant system.  Young babies <1 year old due to less developed immune system are at higher risk as well but current data is not showing this – Breastfeeding will always improve immunity in this age group.
We wanted to detail some of our sanitation and cleaning measures for you, as we all try to make wise, positive choices. In addition, we are again highlighting lifestyle and hygiene measures as well as immune supportive measures.

What We Are Doing
These include our normal protocols. We are adding extra thought to keeping everyone as healthy as possible.
Immune System Booster Facts for Chiropractic office visits
  • White blood cells counts are higher within 15 minutes after a chiropractic adjustment, as shown in the study below.
  • Chiropractic boosts your immune system as much as 200%. (“Pero R.” “Medical Researcher Excited By CBSRF Project Results.” The Chiropractic Journal, August 1989; 32.)
 
 Recommendations for Lifestyle
  1. HEALTHY EATING – Maintain your current nutritional schedule as prescribed or recommended by this office. Limit sugar and processed foods and assure lots of antioxidants from colorful fruits and vegetables.  Reduce alcohol consumption
  2. SLEEP – assure 7 hours or more sleep per night
  3. STAY HYDRATED – minimum of half your body weight in ounces of water
  4. EXERCISE – 30 minutes minimum daily – maintaining good muscle mass especially of the core is very important for fighting respiratory infections. Practice deep breathing to ensure full oxygenation of the lungs.
  5. BREATHE HEALTHY AIR – avoid smoking, secondhand smoke, air pollution and use an air filter for questionable air quality
  6. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS – anything that keeps a healthy mindset to manage stress- Prayer, meditation, self-development work, practicing gratitude, breaking clay pigeons or cheap plates etc.
  7. DO NOT PANIC – stress is ok but stress that is not properly managed will only increase stress hormones and adrenaline and degrade the immune system. 
  8. Continue to get your CHIROPRACTIC CARE, so your brain and body can communicate without interferences.
 
Recommendations for Hygiene
  1. KEEP HANDS WASHED - soap and water is best but if not available can use 60% alcohol or higher hand sanitizer. Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  2. DISINFECT SURFACES – viruses can survive on surfaces and covid-19 may live longer on surfaces than other common viruses.
  3. IF SICK WITH A COUGH DO NOT GET WITHIN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THOSE WITH LOWER IMMUNITY (see above)
  4. IF SICK WITH A COUGH WEAR A MASK TO NOT SPREAD TO OTHERS.  However, standard masks do not help with protecting from the infection
  5. Keep away from others who have had fever.
  6. Avoid touching handrails, door handles and other high traffic surfaces in public places.
  7. Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes, etc.
  8. Avoid non-essential travel.
 
COVID-19 Testing

According to the CDC, if you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your primary care provider immediately. Your primary care professional will work with your state’s public health department and the CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19. If you have a fever, we ask that you please take steps to safeguard others and remain at home. 
 
IMMUNE SUPPORTIVE SUPPLEMENTATION/SERVICES:
(Note: none of the listed therapies have been tested as preventative for COVID-19, they are general immune supportive supplements and services.)
SUPPLEMENTATION (with general suggested dosage):
  1. VITAMIN C – We recommend Vitality C powder (2000-4000 mg per day) or Liposomal C – (1000mg once or twice a day). Vitamin C Powder and Vitamin C Powder Reduced Acidity (1000 mg one to four times per day) For Capsules, we recommend our BioC 1:1 or Buffered C (100-4000 mg daily).  
  2. VITAMIN D3 – knowing your lab level Is best – but generally 5000 IUs daily for 4 weeks then assure 2000-5000 IU’s daily long term. We like our K2/D3 5000 combo for the cold season. *High daily doses long term can be toxic. Vitamin D3 Liquid can be used for lower dosing.
  3. ZINC CHELATE (picolinate) –we recommend our Zinc Picolinate or Elderberry zinc lozenges - assure to take during a meal as zinc can cause nausea –-30 mg is generally recommended
  4. VITAMIN A (in the retinoid form)Vis Clinic’s Vitamin A 25,000 IU’s a day for adults for prevention during the cold and flu season.  * We recommend you consult your Vis Clinic doctor regarding dosing appropriate for you. Individuals with liver disease, Infants and children, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding moms need to be cautious with vitamin A. Our Mixed Carotenoids would be a better choice for those who need to limit retinoid Vitamin A.
  5. SELENIUM (as selenomethionine) - 200 mcg per day for general health and prevention – We recommend our Selenium by Pure Encapsulations or many of our multi vitamins/minerals have the appropriate amount of selenium
  6. GLUTATHIONE – We recommend our Intracellular Glutathione that is in the S-Acetyl form.  Glutathione needs to be in the S-Acetyl form or liposomal – regular reduced glutathione will not be helpful as it will be broken down by your stomach acid.  1 capsule once or twice per day
  7. ELDERBERRY LOZENGES OR SYRUP – We recommend our Elderberry lozenges with zinc - 1 lozenge once or twice a day.  For a great syrup we use Immune Tonic with Elderberry and Echinacea.
  8. BETA GLUCANS – Beta glucans stimulate immune system by enhancing macrophages and natural killer cell function. We recommend our supplement called IMMKINE – 1 capsule twice daily
  9. VIRACID – includes a combination of key nutrients and botanical extracts that provide support for immune challenges. Viracid boosts immune defenses by providing nutrients such as L-lysine vitamins A and C, pantothenic acid, B12, and zinc. Viracid includes the synergistic blend of botanical extracts black elderberry, astragalus, echinacea, and andrographis, all of which have been used traditionally for their clinically effective immune- modulating properties. 2 per day for maintenance.
  10. TRANSFER FACTOR MULTI-IMMUNE – This supplement has a mix of nutrients and plant extracts for immune support, specifically increasing natural killer cells. This supplement will help support proper cellular growth and intended for those with suppressed immunity or those looking for a good formula for prevention.
  CLINIC SERVICES:
  1. LOW DOSE IV VITAMIN C (15-25 GRAMS) – Lower doses of vitamin C intravenously is more supportive to the immune system, higher doses have more of a pro-oxidant effect that is beneficial during active infection
  2. GLUTATHIONE PUSH – to support detox and antioxidant systems in the body
  3. NEBULIZER TREATMENTS – GLUTATHIONE (GSH) with or without Biocidin
    1. GSH inhalation exerts its effects upon the upper and lower respiratory tract. The predominant mechanism responsible for GSH's therapeutic effects are related to its antioxidant properties that offer protection against oxidative injury. GSH inhalation has been shown to improve clinical markers of respiratory function.
    2. Using a nebulizer, a solution of GSH is made into an aerosol and is delivered to the upper respiratory tract and the lungs through a mask that covers the nose and mouth or is delivered directly into the lungs via a mouthpiece. It is delivered over the course of 3-5 minutes or more.
    3. Biocidin is a broad-spectrum botanical combination formula with anti-microbial action that helps fight off viral, bacterial, and fungal infections and comes in a liquid form that can be added to a nebulizer.
    4. We generally add 5 drops of liquid Biocidin to the Glutathione mixture for colds, flu, sinus issues, or respiratory conditions.
    5. 1-2x per week or more for prevention, especially for those individuals with weak lungs (COPD, ASTHMA) 
 
     
WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE SICK AT HOME:
(Note: none of these therapies have been tested as treatment for COVID-19, they are general immune supportive supplements.)
 

SUPPLEMENTATION (with general suggested dosage):
  1. VITAMIN C - We recommend Vitality C powder (4000-8000 Mg per day) or Liposomal C – (1000 mg 4 times a day. Our Buffered vitamin C or BioC 1:1 capsules as well as our Vitamin C Powder and Vitamin C Reduced Acidity Powder can be taken on an hourly basis to bowel tolerance.  Vitamin C is water soluble and pharmacokinetics dictate that smaller, frequent dosing will work much better to maintain higher serum levels than large infrequent dosing.
  2. ZINC PICOLINATE – we recommend 30 mg twice per day with food
  3. VIS CLINIC VITAMIN A 25,000 IU - 100,000 IUs a day for 3 days – * DO NOT take this dose if pregnant or nursing nor in a young child
  4. N-ACETYLCYSTEINE (NAC)– 600 mg three times a day especially if congested or 900 mg two times daily away from food.
  5. ANTI-V FORMULA – As recommended on bottle
  6. LYSINE EXTRA – As recommended on bottle
  7. GLUTATHIONE – We recommend our Intracellular Glutathione that is in the S-Acetyl form.  Glutathione needs to be in the S-Acetyl form or liposomal – regular reduced glutathione will not be helpful as it will be broken down by your stomach acid.  1 capsule three times per day while sick.

  10. MONLAURIN – a naturally occurring fat – Cellular studies have theorized that this fat enters the membrane of the virus and prevents the virus from entering your cells; also, scientists believe that it disrupts viral replication. 1000- 1200 mg twice daily for active infection
  11. PROBOOST THYMIC PROTEIN A – As recommended on bottle
  12. VIRACID– As recommended on bottle
 
CLINIC SERVICES:
Note: According to the CDC, if you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as cough or difficulty breathing, call your primary care provider immediately. Your primary care professional will work with your state’s public health department and the CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.  We have no proven therapy to treat COVID-19.
 
We can continue to treat those with colds and flu as we have done for the past 16 years.
We have a private room for those with cold/flu symptoms that have tested negative for Covid-19 to receive IV therapies. We will ask you to wear a mask and call prior to entering the clinic so proper precautions can be taken

 
  1. HIGH DOSE IV VITAMIN C (50 GRAMS OR HIGHER)
    1. Although vitamin C has not been studied in coronavirus COVID-19, Vitamin C in high enough doses has been shown to be very effective at eradicating the influenza virus, along with many other viral syndromes (Klenner, 1949; Vargas-Magne, 1963).
    2. Vitamin C contributes to immune defense by supporting and directly stimulating various cellular functions of both the innate and adaptive immune system. Vitamin C has the ability to upregulate the immune system, and the scientific literature has shown the ability of vitamin C to cure a number of viruses (Klenner, 1951; Stone, 1972; Levy, 2002, Gonzalez, 2014, Gonzalez, 2016).
    3. TESTING: Must have a current normal G6PD level on file to receive higher than 25 grams intravenously – this assures you are a candidate for this therapy
    4. These may be performed 2-3 times per week while sick
 
  1. NEBULIZER TREATMENTS – GLUTATIONE with or without Biocidin
    1. See above explanation
    2. For active infection, we generally add 5 drops of liquid Biocidin to the Glutathione mixture for colds, flu, sinus issues, or respiratory conditions.
    3. It can be used up to 3x daily for short or long-term use.
 
  1. EAR OZONE INSUFFLATION
    1. Ozone has bactericidal, viricidal, and fungicidal action; it modulates the immune system, and increases effectiveness of the antioxidant enzyme systems in the body.
    2. During ear insufflations an ozone/oxygen gas mix is slowly introduced into the ears via a modified stethoscope.  This ozone readily absorbs into the lymphatic system of the ear drum and saturates the brain and sinus area.  It has the ability to penetrate the head, neck, and eyes. 
    3. Many patients have reported a wide variety of positive results including relief of allergies, relief of colds, clearing of sore throats, and swollen glands.  Ear ozone insufflations are great at treating acute and chronic sinus infections.  3-5 treatments per week may be necessary for acute situations. Otherwise, 2-3 treatments per week are utilized depending on condition. The entire treatment is only 3-8 minutes in duration. 
 
  1. NATURAL SINUS RELIEF THERAPY– for sinus congestion/ sinus infection
    1. Involves sinus acupressure and the use of antimicrobial and decongestant essential oils inserted in the sinus cavity using nasal applicators.  While the applicators are in place, diathermy (deep penetrating heat) is applied over the sinuses for 15-20 minutes.  The patient relaxes lying down while focusing on breathing deeply through their nostrils.
    2. This can be performed 2-5 times per week during acute infection
 
  1. HYDROTHERAPY- CONSTITUTIONAL AND WET SHEET PACKS
    1. It is a backbone of Naturopathic Medicine for enhancing the immune response. Indications for its use in enhancing the immune system include bronchitis, colds, flu and digestive upset.
    2. This therapy is used to stimulate circulation, enhance elimination of wastes, increase white blood cell migration, increase red blood cell production and improve nutrient delivery to cells
    3. It is an ideal therapy for cold and flu prevention during the fall and winter months.
    4. As a preventative consider scheduling this therapy weekly or monthly.
    5. When used as a treatment for acute illness it can be used daily.
