Greetings Spinners,

Last Tuesday (St. Patrick's Day) there were 16 "Solo Spinners" who showed up and rode SW about 20 miles while keeping their distance from one another by at least the required 6 feet. As you can see from the photo below the group was well dispersed for the photo & throughout the ride. (Jeff's legs were busy taking the photo & thankfully re-attached to help Sue pedal the tandem).

Joel Update:

Dear Friends and Relatives of Joel Hable,

February 29, Abbey and Shane accompanied Joe on an airplane from Baltimore to Milwaukee.  Abbey has put Joe into a routine immediately back in South Beloit, IL.   He goes to therapy near Chicago three days a week and on his off days he does mental and physical exercises.  Either Shane or Abbey will have been with him until next week.  They are training Joe's caretaker, Laimute to handle him all by herself 24/7.  Laimute is Lithuania but has been in the States 16 years, and is a veteran in this job.  Last week I spent several days with them and she is excellent and an wonderful cook!

Joe will be taking a van to therapy, but other than that will slowly acclimate and get out to meet friends at work, church and the bike shop.  Joel can speak in longer sentences at times.  Later in the day and when he gets tired his speech is garbled.  Heck, his gaffs aren't that much worse than the President of the United States or the Democratic front-runner.  He walks around his house like he owns it.  He can write his name and then some and puts together some complicated jigsaw puzzles.  From my viewpoint, his limiting factors are his short term memory and his balance, but he loves to ride his recumbent stationary bicycle.  Yes, there is talk of getting him out on the road or better yet, the bike trail, but if wants to?

Joel is still a bit thin but has a voracious appetite.    He is starting to have that glow of life on his face with that distinctive smile of Joe.

There still isn't any reason why Joe couldn't improve but it will most likely be slow.  His ability to travel distances will be limited, but his kids goal is to get him to the Hable reunion in Bloomer in June.

So many friends and relatives have asked about visiting Joel.  For now, in the interest of getting Joe settled in and in a routine which is so important for him, visiting hasn't been encouraged.  However, Abbey and Shane know the importance of their Dad's support system, and in time when Joe's ready there will be a contact and protocol.  After all, you are a big reason why Joel moved back home.

SAFETY TIP:

As a follow-up to last week's safety tip I neglected to mention that the accident where the car blew through the stop sign and the cyclists did not STOP was fatal to the cyclist. Let's observe all stop signs and traffic signals.

"How to Ride Safely Amid Coronavirus Concerns" from Bicycling magazine. Read for information on whether it's safe and how to minimize risk for yourself and others.
