New Order Directing Individuals to Shelter at Home
In hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19, Health Officers throughout the Bay Area have ordered their residents to shelter in place limiting activity, travel and business functions to only the most essential needs. The affected counties of this order are Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Contra Costa, and Alameda Counties and the City of Berkeley. The order went into effect Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 12:00 am. The order will stay in effect until 11:59 on April 7 or until it is extended, or amended by the Health Officer.

We understand there may be a lot of confusion and questions about this new directive. To help, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department has addressed general questions about the order on their website.

Immigration Laws Update: Public Charge and COVID-19

USCIS Alert declares on their website that:
Seeking medical treatment for COVID-19 does not negatively affect future Public Charge Rule for immigrants.

USCIS encourages everyone, including immigrants, showing symptoms that resemble COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath) to seek necessary medical treatment or preventive services.

To address the possibility that some immigrants impacted by COVID-19 may be hesitant to seek necessary medical treatment or preventive services, USCIS will not consider testing, treatment, nor preventative care (including vaccines, if a vaccine becomes available) related to COVID-19 as part of the public charge test.
