A Note from the Head Teacher

Dear Readers,

I hope you are all well and keeping safe! These are challenging times for all and we would like to make education as smooth and enjoyable as possible for all families. We are now fully online with our Online Learning and Teaching Program and we are happy to see that everyone is finding it easier by the day. I am sure using the online platforms by next week it will be just as easy as coming to school under normal circumstances.

We would like to thank you for your continuous support! Our teachers as well are working relentlessly to provide the best online teaching experience and we are very much looking forward to soon hear about their experiences which we will be sharing with you in the coming issues.

Hope you will enjoy reading our newsletter!

Until next week kind regards,

Ms. Gabriella Gidró
Director

FEATURING
Online tanulási tapasztalatok szülőktől

Próbáljuk felvenni az új ritmust itthon.
A jó hír, hogy a Google Classroom hibátlanul működik. A gyerekek motiváltak, a kicsinek nagyon izgalmas. Andreasnak nem újdonság, évek óta használja. Most sokkal hatékonyabb, hiszen a tanárok is aktívan kell használják.
A barátok hiányoznak, lassan a tanárok is fognak. Most felértékelődött az online kommunikáció, napi szinten beszélnek egyszerre több osztálytársukkal is.
Én köszönöm a tanárok eddigi segítségét!
Kitartást mindenkinek!

Online learning experiences so far from our parents

We are trying to pick up a new routine at home.
The good news is that Google Classroom is working flawlessly. The kids are motivated, the little one is very excited about it. Andreas, however, has been using it for years. It is now much more effective because it is also actively used by teachers. Communication is easier and faster. We are fortunate enough to say that we can provide separate computers for both, this, however, can possibly be more problematic for families if more than one child studying at a time. Of course, it's all about how we make it work.
We still do have some problems with our daily routine, but it is easy to take a break at any time to have a drink or stroke the dog. I enjoy being together as a family, and I hope the kids do as well.
They are missing their friends, and soon the teachers as well. Now, online communication has become more valuable, they are talking to many of their classmates online on a daily basis. They listen to a lot of music and wake up relaxed because they don't have to get up at six. They are more comfortable with starting the day with a full belly, and then they organize their to does. I'll just have to find out something for myself to do about them yelling Mother! from one room to another! No one is bored. This is a new situation for everyone, and we try to solve it with laughter. I need just as much patience as they do.
I thank the teachers for their help so far!
Keep going, everyone!

NEWS

Finance day presentation by our former student Dávid Tóth

"I started elementary school in 1998, here at SEK Budapest. I remember we went to check out 3 or 4 schools with my parents and the least they favoured at first was this, but I just felt that I would feel good here. Of course, I have shady memories about this, but my parents told me that I declared it that this will be my school and of course it was still a valid choice; learning English and Spanish from the age of 7, what could go wrong?

Fast forward 2020, I'm talking to ten graders at SEK Budapest about myself and the basics of personal finance and budgeting. The fact that I spent 12 years here within (almost) the same walls as they do now, made them curious I suppose. I introduced myself, told them some stories about my years in Valencia, what I work now, how I found the job that I love, a bit about my personal life and so on. Based on this we tried to put together my monthly budget, what does a 28-year-old spend his money on, they had to guess the categories and the amounts. After we finished we compared the assumed budget, to my actual monthly spendings. I hope that in 90 minutes I could at least give them a glimpse of what kind of expenses one will have to think about in early adulthood.

To me, this session meant something else as well, something more emotional. Returning to this school, where, as of now,  I spent more than 40% of my life will always be special. The scents on the hallways will always bring back childhood memories. When I walked around in the school before the classes started I felt that I am the classmate of everyone here, as I went through every single thing they will, each and every student. I felt like I have all the answers or guidance they might be looking for. So I hope I will have the chance to come back and talk to these awesome girls and boys and share my experiences with them.”

Whom we are proud of

I'd like to share with you some heartwarming news in this currently not-so-happy situation.

I am pleased to inform you that Anna, a self-proclaimed and unassisted, representative of her school, at the MOZAIK Publisher's National Internet Study Competition, was ranked 41st in the Literature course, one place (to our knowledge, one point) behind the national finalist.

We are delighted that Anna has decided to enter the competition and to complete it all by herself. Thus, this result truly reflects and praises her knowledge and diligence.

Well done Anna! We are proud of you!
LITERATURE CORNER
In honor of our poetry unit and the welcomed presence of an earlier rising sun, the 11th grade IB English literature students were asked to flex their creative muscles once again and write about this image of a sunrise. The results varied and were as beautiful as the image itself. Enjoy!

A CHILD’S FIRST MOVE
by   Mayuri Sriram

They crawled through the sky,
An emergence of height.

Not a single fight,
Ah! What a sight.

A touch of nature,
A spark of light.

A vibrance set to fly,
With a witness of nil.
I know not how,
But I do not wonder why.

PRESCHOOL CORNER

Online Learning in the Preschool

The corona virus has effectively made traditional schooling as we no it impossible to continue with the government decree closing down schools and preschools across the nation. It is for this reason that we quickly made the transition across to online education to do our part to socially distance ourselves from each other, yet at the same time continuing preschool education in these testing circumstances.

Since Tuesday we have been posting tasks and material to google classroom. All parents should have already received an email to join these online classes. Our teachers have been posting video lessons and simple home tasks which require parental cooperation in uploading completed tasks.

Thanks to all the parents who have taken this change in their stride and uploaded responses to our tasks. Learning still continues in these testing times.

OUR SEK / IES PEERS AROUND THE WORLD
Lengthen, Outspoken, Abandon... Bingo!

Playing games in the classroom help to keep students engaged and involved in their learning because they can enjoy and learn at the same time. Since the beginning of the school year, they have been practicing and getting familiar with spelling words by playing Bingo. This has been a fun way to review frequently misspelt words. This is how Bingo is played: the teacher reads the words, and later the students want to do it themselves, too because they feel confident enough. When a student gets a row or Bingo, that student must stand up and spell out all the words correctly. They get small prizes every time they play!
As a sixth grade English Teacher, I hope one of my students will be able to win the Spelling Bee!

World Book Day

Last Thursday, staff were greeted with an amazing array of weird and wonderful creatures and characters as we all gathered in the hall to celebrate the annual World Book Day. It is lots of fun, trying to guess who everyone is, and I for one, certainly think it has a positive basis: children discussing a book, that they like to read, with other people.

This year, we were joined by author and poet Wes Magee. He shared with us all, some of his books for all ages and then worked in each class throughout the day. In each of the junior classes he worked with the children on a chosen topic to produce a whole class poem. He had a natural, fun, entertaining personality that engaged the children. What better way to celebrate literature than to write your own!
