SEEKING YOUR FEEDBACK ON A NAME CHANGE
Please read then take our 1 minute survey.

Is there a problem with the current name?
The committee has been considering a name change for some time. The current name is not seen to accurately reflect the organisation's identity or purpose as the organisation does not operate as an institute. People are confused about our activities, role, mission and difference to Bike SA. Despite 40 years of effort the majority of Adelaide bike riders still don’t know we exist. We have to grow our membership (people power!) but in 2020 The Bicycle Institute of SA is very hard to market. As is advocacy - hence the more broadly appealing name suggestion.

Has the name changed before?
Yes, in 1991 the Cyclist Protection Association was renamed the Bicycle Institute of SA (that’s us!) to match other interstate cycling associations. At the time Bicycle QLD, Bicycle NSW and Bicycle Victoria (now the Bicycle Network) all had institute included in their name. All have since updated.

What is being proposed?
After a thorough process including asking you for ideas, speaking with life members and younger riders and taking some suggestions to our AGM this year, the committee is proposing The Bicycle Institute of SA change its name to I Bike Adelaide. Our aim is to achieve:
  • Better brand recognition
  • Better alignment with who we are
  • Growth in membership including riders of all ages (5000+)
  • Reduced confusion with Bike SA
  • An easy to say, easy to remember, individual name.

LEGS!
Will membership change?
No. Membership will remain free. Our members will naturally fall into two categories. Each is important:
  1. Active members working to achieve our goals – cheers for helping out.
  2. Supporting members – you ride and that’s awesome.
Are there any possible issues?
The name I Bike Adelaide does neglect the broader South Australian association. However, this reflects the reality of BISA’s existing activity which has predominately focused on the Greater Adelaide region. Our intention is to continue our work in the Greater Adelaide area, including working with BUGs in regions such as Mount Barker and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Also, if asked for advice from riders in rural areas we would be happy to assist and our advocacy will continue for state policies to support active transport and cycle tourism routes.
