Perth, Scotland – The World Curling Federation has cancelled the European Curling Championships C-Division 2020, in Slovenia, due to the ongoing spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
This qualification event, for women’s and men’s teams in the Federation’s European zone, was set to take place between 28 April and 5 May in the Ledena dvorana Zalog, in Ljubljana.
This announcement follows the cancellation of the World Women’s, LGT World Men’s, World Mixed Doubles and World Senior Curling Championships 2020 and it now means the international curling season is officially over.
With the event now not taking place the World Curling Federation will consider the implications on qualification to the B-Division of the Le Gruyère AOP European Curling Championships 2020.
World Curling Federation President, Kate Caithness, said: “It’s with great sadness we now declare the 2019-2020 international curling season over. Over the coming weeks we will take time to carefully consider all the repercussions of these cancelled events.
“My sincere thanks go to the organising committee in Slovenia for their hard work pulling this event together and their understanding in having to cancel it. As always, in everything we do, we are prioritising the health and well-being of our athletes and officials.
“We must now look ahead to the return of curling in the 2020-2021 season and continuing our journey to the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.”
