THE SCHOOL OF LIFE
Connecting During Times of Disconnection
“The most fruitful and natural exercise for our minds is, in my opinion, conversation. I find the use of it more sweet than of any other action in life; and for that reason it is that, if I were now compelled to choose, I should sooner, I think, consent to lose my sight than my hearing and speech.”
Michel de Montaigne, Of the Art of Conversation

As Montaigne knew, conversation is one of life’s sweetest joys. It’s an insight that carries special significance in the present moment. During periods of isolation, when we may be separated from friends and loved ones, we’re reminded that good conversation is not just a fringe benefit - it’s the means by which we stay sane, contented and connected in the midst of a storm.

In such circumstances, it’s understandable that we may be preoccupied with the practical question of how to communicate remotely. Yet we shouldn’t lose sight of the larger, more important question: what we should converse about. A good conversation - one where we transcend the mundane minutiae of everyday existence and explore our deepest hopes, fears, beliefs and emotions - can bring us closer together than mere proximity ever could.

At The School of Life, we’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what exactly makes a good conversation: how they arise, what they encompass, and how they can bring us inner fulfilment. Click the link below to learn more, or continue scrolling to watch our video and browse our collection of prompts, games and questions that can ensure the conversations you have are deep and meaningful - no matter how many miles may separate you.
From YouTube: How to Have a Good Conversation
We too often imagine that ‘good conversations’ are things we fall into out of luck. Far from it, knowing how to have a good conversation is a skill that can be learnt – and here are the beginning of the rules.
100 Questions Family Edition
Whether they’re all under the same roof or spaced many miles apart, a good conversation can play a vital part in building a stronger connection between generations. Our 100 Questions: Family Edition is a box of carefully composed questions designed to spark imaginative, thought-provoking conversations between children and their adult relatives.
Conversation Menus
These twenty beautifully designed Conversation Menus lead us artfully to some of the most fascinating and revealing conversation topics - such as love, money, travel ambition, self-knowledge and the meaning of life. They contain questions and invitations to discussion that will raise smiles, build friendships and foster the best kind of intimacy - be that at the dinner table, or over the phone.
We should be braver and more demanding about the conversations we fall into. Rather than seeing successful examples as a gift, we should strive to become their regular engineers and cultivators.
