Calisphere and the Online Archive of California (OAC) are gateways to unique collections held by libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural heritage institutions throughout California.

Promoting Digital Collection Resources

The recommendation in this 1944 United States Public Health Service’s poster sounds all too familiar these days. We hope all of our colleagues are staying well and healthy.

While COVID-19 precautionary measures are widely impacting fundamental educational and library services, researchers, students, and educators may still need to meet project deadlines. Please remember that Calisphere is an open and freely available resource you can share with your community. In addition to our existing outreach tips and tools, we are happy to supply language for blog posts, newsletters, or resource lists to help get the word out. Please contact us with any questions, suggestions, or requests.

Tips and Reminders!

Setting up your organization’s Google Analytics “Tracker ID”

All set with publishing collections on OAC and Calisphere? Now's the fun part: seeing their usage!

We use Google Analytics, which allows us to analyze usage by contributor, collection, or even by item. We can also parse and share usage stats with each specific contributor, so that you can always have access to your own usage reports in real-time.
Interested in getting started? First things first: you’ll need to do a little bit of work under-the-hood to set up your organization’s Google Analytics “property,” as shown in the screenshots below. You’ll need to do this twice, once for OAC and again for Calisphere, to establish distinct reporting environments.  We have step-by-step details in our help center, but if you think you may already have your properties set up, send us a note and we’ll check.
Creating a new “property” will generate a “Tracker ID,” a 9-character string beginning with the letters "UA." Send this over to us to put into your organization profile. Once we’re done, you’ll be able to analyze your OAC and Calisphere usage stats through your own Google Analytics.

User guides to set up your OAC and Calisphere properties are available on our OAC/Calisphere Contributor Help Center. However, feel free to join us as we demo this setup process during our upcoming Office Hours session on March 18th. We’ll also dive into some of the cool visualization options and filters in Google Analytics. Please see meeting details to register.

A note from our colleagues at LYRASIS:

NHPRC Small and Diverse Archival Organization Needs Assessment Survey

We’d like to circulate a message from LYRASIS that may be of interest to the OAC/Calisphere contributor community. If you represent a small and diverse archival organization, please feel free to participate in this survey to express your organization’s needs.

LYRASIS has been hired by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) to develop a Small and Diverse Archival Organization Needs Assessment Survey. Thank you for your interest in the project—your support is critical to understanding the needs of small archives and supporting the field!

We believe that “small archives” are generally defined as those repositories with budgets of $100,000 or less and/or holdings of 1,000 cubic feet or less—these are not absolute figures—and repositories should not skip the survey if they have slightly larger budgets or holdings.

We recommend you review the form and your answers with your colleagues before beginning to answer the survey online; we hope to have one survey representing a single institution, and not multiple surveys from a single site. The survey is available at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NHPRC2020

We are providing you with a PDF version of the survey to assist you in drafting answers and completing the survey prior to entering your information online. If you wish, you may print the survey NHPRC.pdf to review and discuss with your colleagues before completing online.
We estimate the survey will take no more than 20 minutes to complete. The survey is editable so that if you close or exit the browser before submitting your responses, you may finish later, but we encourage you to complete it in one sitting.

Confidentiality: Your responses are being collected and analyzed by LYRASIS, an independent, nonprofit, membership organization serving libraries, archives, and museums. They will be kept confidential. Only aggregate results will be reported. Please answer these questions to help us learn about Small and Diverse Archival Organization needs. To submit your answers, you must click on the “Done” button at the end of the survey form. Please submit the survey by March 25, 2020 at 5:00 Eastern time (2:00 Pacific time).

If you have any questions, please contact Leigh A. Grinstead at leigh.grinstead@lyrasis.org

Thank you for your support with this important project.
