Rachel Meyer Yoga

Save the date:
I'll be teaching a series of workshops in Nebraska Jan. 27-29th, 2012.
Details to follow!
What are you up to Saturday night?
My dear friend (and incredible dancer) Claudia Anata Hubiak is hosting a cocktail party to benefit her beautiful bi-coastal dance company, The Anata Project. Silent auction items include a private yoga session with moi. Join us from 6-9pm at 111 Minna, won't you?
This is the cake I baked for Bhakti Kitchen's yoga of eating workshop last month. It was vegan, gluten-free, and stupidly delicious. Recipe here.

Keep your eyes out for the December 2011 issue of Yoga Journal.  I've got a new article.  Should be hitting newsstands any day now.
Please swing by my blog and say hello. My class playlists live here, too.
Hello, Hanuman.
Amanda Giacomini created this gorgeous painting of Hanuman for the workshop last Saturday at Urban Flow. I learned so much about this devoted Monkey God. And had a helluva good time, to boot.
Meet our beloved

Why, hello there, my little turkeys.

November. How'd that happen?

So much to be thankful for here at Rachel Meyer Yoga. We've got new classes, new articles, and new adventures — Thailand, baby! — just around the corner. What's autumn bringing for you lately, other than colder weather and shorter days? And, most importantly, here in this season of gratitude: what are you grateful for (well, other than green bean casserole and stuffing)?

As for me, I don't really know where to begin. Life just keeps getting better.

The last month has brought several opportunities to practice with some really remarkable teachers. Bryan Kest brought his power yoga to Urban Flow in mid-October, and just last Saturday, MC Yogi, his wife Amanda and my dear friend and colleague Andrea Maltzer shared a kickin' "Rock On, Hanuman" practice. Kathryn Budig will be here on the 19th for another workshop, too — and after practicing with Kathryn at Wanderlust and loving her grounded, funny, very real style, I can't wait to spend the afternoon learning from her.

I'm just two weeks from flying out to Thailand for a fortnight. I'll spend a few days in Bangkok (assuming it's no longer under water) and then head south to Railay Beach to officiate the wedding of dear friends Jinny and Derek the day after Thanksgiving. After a few jungle adventures with them, I'll fly to Koh Samui, where I'm booked for a week of writing and yoga, and will hopefully squeeze in a few practices with iconic teacher Richard Freeman, as well. The goal? To catch up on sleep, yes, and to do a little yoga here and a little beaching there, but mostly, to come back with a finished book manuscript. I've got so much writing that I've been chomping at the bit to do, and in spite of missing y'all over the holidays, I can't wait to hunker down with my laptop, some bare feet, a beachy cocktail and crank a few thousand words out.

Don't forget, per usual: Buy Nothing Day is the Friday after Thanksgiving. I'll always be grateful to my Pops for teaching us that material goods don't necessarily bring happiness. Skip the malls and take the day to step outside the box, to remember that living well is not about accumulating stuff, but instead about breathing and loving and doing and knowing. The toys will pass. And what's left then? You. The breath. And that one wild and precious life.

I'm still just so pleased to be teaching at Urban Flow. Please continue to join me Tuesdays and Thursdays 4:30-6pm.  It's such a beautiful space, especially now as the days grow short and the studio slips into twilight. I'm now at Flying Yoga Sunday mornings at 10:45, as well, so please join me for a groggy wake-up, coffee or no. Full winter teaching schedule details here.

Thailand dates? Mon. Nov. 21st - Mon. Dec. 5th. Back on the mat Tuesday the 6th. Thanks for being a dear part of my days. I'm grateful. So much love your way. And, as ever: Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah.

Love,
R

Writing Updates

It's been a great month for writing. My, er, "passionate" (read: f-bomb-laden) piece on "Why Yoga's Not a Workout" was published on elephant journal, and to date it's been viewed and shared via social media over 7,000 times. This was an important piece for me to sit down and write, and one that had been on my heart, wanting to be written, for some time, so I am beyond grateful to find that folks have really connected with it.

I'm continually inspired by and motivated by one of my literary heroines, Audre Lorde, whose own passionate, fearless writing encouraged us to remember that "your silence will not protect you." I feel grateful to be developing a voice as a grounded, edgy, honest (and yes, sometimes foul-mouthed) writer, yoga teacher, and philosopher.

You can find the full piece here. The comments were lively and (for the most part) sweet. They could merit an article in and of themselves.

Yesterday I wrote this brief piece about that beloved old Psalm 46:10: Be still and know that I am God. I kind of love it. It's a little softer than the other.
