CULTUREWORK

Dear Reader,

We are thrilled to share our first issue of 2020 with you, and we hope it brings some comfort and connection in this uncertain time. This winter, we turned our explorations toward the theme of aging.

This season, bring you a fresh selection of poetry. B. Elae’s “Stay for a While,” reflects on the mixed emotions that come with watching a loved one age, while Renzo Vergara brings us an expression of the pain and stigma that can accompany the aging process.  Cristian Gorostieta’s new piece explores the ways we scaffold and contextualize experiences of love, suffering, and change over time.

The centrality of family relationships in meaning-making about aging was a recurring motif. Cecilia Flores's nonfiction piece "Driving Parallel to the Sierra Madres" allows a glimpse into a multigenerational road trip that is turns both funny and poignant. In an interview with his son, pastor and spiritual leader Joel Blunk elucidates the importance of rites of passage in modern life, while audio archive Sarah and the Woobies chronicles a family’s experience creating their own rite of passage ritual.

This issue also features an interview with artist Joey Stiegelman, whose sculptural works play with ideas about childhood, memory, and temporality through her striking choice of materials.

We continued our themed playlist tradition with a collection of songs on the topic of aging. Listen and add your own favorite music on the topic!

                                                 With gratitude,
