Guildford HC News - 2019/20 Season Issue 27 - 20 Mar 2020
View this email in your browser
Dear GHC Hockey Family,

This edition of our club's weekly e-zine was not meant to be the last one of the 2019/20 season - there was still going to be plenty of news from remaining league and cup matches, end of season play-offs, regional (perhaps national) finals, and of course our biggest ever Spring/Summer programme.

However, as you will know, all League and England Hockey activity has stopped in accordance with the British Government and Public Health England guidance on the covid-19 pandemic.

InTouch won't be arriving every Friday until we know better how the virus situation pans out. But please do keep an eye on our GHC twitter, instagram, facebook accounts, the GHC website, emails and the occasional InTouch for ways to keep engaged with the hockey community.

Club leaders will, of course, be monitoring the situation and let you know what parts of our programme may be able to go ahead in what timeframes.

In the meantime, on this International Day of Happiness, please enjoy this round-up of the 2019/20 season thus far - and of course stay safe and well!

Do get in touch if you have news or ideas to share with the GHC community... news@guildfordhc.com

Senior League Results from Saturday 14 March

A few GHC Senior teams had some really big wins last weekend

The Cavaliers, Men's 3s and Ladies' 3s scored 18 goals between them - and let in only 1!

Sadly, the Ladies' 1s' undefeated streak came to an end - our only Ladies' loss this week.

The Men's 1s scored three goals; unfortunately, league leaders London Wayfarers scored twice as many.

It was a pretty strong showing overall on Saturday... and only a couple of days later we would find out that was the end of the season (more on current standings below).

P14: W9 D1 L4

Ladies' Leagues
L1s v Surbiton 1-2 (L)
L2s v London Edwardians 1-0 (W)
L3s v London Wayfarers 6-0 (W)
L4s v Oxted 3-0 (W)
L5s v Epsom 3-1 (W)
L6s v Team Surrey Spartans 2-2 (D)

Men's Leagues
M1s v London Wayfarers 3-6 (L)
M2s v Old Georgians 4-2 (W)
Shadows v Reigate Priory 1-3 (L)
M3s v Purley Walcountonians 7-1 (W)
M4s v Old Kingstonians 1-0 (W)
Cavaliers v Horley 5-0 (W)
Pilgrims v Richmond 3-1 (W)
Gondoliers v Haslemere 0-3 (or 4?) (L)

EH Tier 2 Round 4 Match Sunday 15 March

GHC Ladies 1s won their quarterfinal match in the England Hockey Tier 2 Championships, beating Wapping 3-0.

This means they progress to the semi-finals of this national competition for the second year running (last year they were runners-up).

They were due to meet Sheffield University 1st XI on 29 March while Loughborough Students 2nd XI were to take on Penzance 1st XI in the semi-finals.

Unfortunately all EH national competitions are on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic so at this point we don't know if further rounds will be played.

Well done, Ladies, for the super wins so far!

Junior Round-up of Sunday Fixture Results

The Boys U14C team had a strong 5-2 win over Old Georgians in their development league. Great way to finish the season - well done boys!

The Girls U12s played a close 4-5 match against Wallingford with some of the girls playing in their first 11-a-side match. Super job.

Other GU12 teams had big wins including 4-0 and 16-1 over Teddington.

But the big news of the day was that the Boys Under 10 and Girls Under 10 A teams both won Silver medals in the Surrey County Cup.

As top two finishers, they are due to join the top two teams from other counties across the region in the South Finals (we wait to see if the tournament will go ahead).
2019/20 Season
League Standings and Achievements

We thought we would get one more weekend of hockey in before the coronavirus came too close,

One more Saturday and Sunday would have finished quite a few leagues and competitions, though not all.

Of course we all hope that things get back to normal as soon as they can, but in the meantime, here is a look at what the teams have achieved to this point in the season...

Men's Leagues

Men's 1s - South Prem - 4th of 12
Men's 2s - Surrey Div 1 - 6th of 12
Shadows - Surrey Div 3 - 8th of 12
Men's 3s - South Open Dv 1 - 1st of 12
Men's 4s - South Open Dv 4 - 5th of 10
Cavaliers - South Open Dv 5 - 4th of 10
Pilgrims - London O40 Dv 2 - 2nd of 10
Gondoliers - Wessex Fixtres - 6th of 13

Highlights include Men's 3s who scored 80 goals - highest in the league and ended with a +47 goal difference (also highest) and secured the top spot with a game to still be played.

Men's Pilgrims finish in 2nd place in the London Over 40s Master League.

All but one Men's team are top half of their league tables, with two teams coming top two (and should be promoted though we wait to see what happens officially due to the pandemic).

Women's Leagues

Ladies' 1s - South Prem - 5th of 12
Ladies' 2s - Surrey Div 1 - 3rd of 12 (GD)
Ladies' 3s - Surrey Div 6 - 2nd of 10
Ladies' 4s - Surrey Div 9 - 1st of 10
Ladies' 5s - Surrey Div 9 - 2nd of 10
Ladies' 6s - Surrey Div 12 - 6th of 9

The Ladies' 4s were undefeated having won all but one match which they drew. They secured the top spot in the table with 3 matches to go. Also top goal scorers with 87 scored (36 ahead of next highest) and a whopping +73 goal difference, having let in only 14 goals in 17 matches!

The Ladies' 5s were right behind them in the same league table - as they have been for the past three seasons!

So, that's 2 promotions for the Ladies to add to the 2 for the Men. And the Ladies' 2s are still in with a shout, on the same points as 2nd place with a game still to play (if it can be played).

Twelve of our 14 adult league teams finish to this point in the season with positive goal difference including the Shadows on -1 which surely they can improve if able to play their final match of the season!

Well done to all!

Women's Tier 2 National Championship

This national competition started with 55 teams. GHC Ladies were runners-up last season and determined to go one better this season:

1st Round - bye
2nd Round - conceded by EG
3rd Round - won on penalties v Teddington
4th Round - won 3-0 v Wapping

...the team progress to the semi-final...

which has been put on hold until we know more about the virus pandemic.

Junior Leagues

Boys U18 - 3rd (likely 2nd if final match played)
Boys U16A - 7th of 7
Boys U16B - 3rd of 4
Boys U16C - 5th of 6
Boys U14A - 2nd of 8
Boys U14B - 3rd of 6
Boys U14C - 6th of 8

Girls U16A - 1st of 6
Girls U16B - 5th of 6
Girls U14A - 1st of 4
Girls U14B - 2nd of 5
Girls U14C - 2nd of 7
Girls U14D - 3rd of 6

The Girls U16 A team won all of their league matches notching up the highest goals scored and lowest goals conceded in their league.

And the Girls U14 A team won their Premier league with the highest number of goals and goal difference in their league.

Discount Code for GHC to Buy This Book

If you're self-isolating at home and don't know what to do with yourself - no hockey training, no matches, no sport on TV - then why not get stuck into a good book?

We've heard about a novel with hockey in it - it's called No Number Nine and it's partly set at the Sydney Olympics.

"Calling all #hockeyfamily - this book needs to go straight to the top of your summer reading list. Drama, love, laughter, lots of hockey players & hockey club antics we can all relate to."

        - Helen Richardson-Walsh

"A brilliant book. I have given it a 5 star rating. If you want to reminisce about life in your twenties this book has it all. If you have ever played hockey or been to spectate at an Olympic Games then this book is definitely one to read.”

       - Goodreads review

England Hockey Player Survey 2020

Please click on this link to complete the survey!

England Hockey collect data each year in the interest of improving our sport.

If we get enough Guildford HC players completing the survey we will receive a detailed report from EH which can help us gauge how we are doing.

You will also be entered into a draw to win tickets to the Stoop.

Please take the time to fill it in - all that self-isolation time might help...

Many thanks!

Easter Camp: 6-7 April

Surrey Youth Games 2020

GHC will be running the hockey sessions for SYG 2020 for both Waverley and Guildford Boroughs!

For those unfamiliar with the games, the objective is to get children ages 6 to 16 to try a new sport.

8 weeks of coaching sessions are free (!) and then there is a big inter-borough tournament/event on 13-14 June at the Surrey Sports Park.

The sessions start in April and will run on a Wednesday evening - tell your friends who don't (yet) play club hockey.

For more information and to sign up, see the Surrey Youth Games webpage.

If anyone would like to help fund/sponsor our SYG 2020 Coaching, please get in touch with Dan.
