Newsletter April 2020

Good morning everyone,

I truly hope this newsletter finds you and your family well.

Wow!!, where do I start with this month?  A month ago, Covid19 was barely a passing comment in conversation and now, it is impossible not to be touched by it regardless of where in the world you are!  I’m sure you have been improving your zoom skills, connecting with loved ones and doing your bit to keep everyone safe! Thank you!!

Strangely, I have not picked up my camera for 10 days, almost unheard of for me…such a strange time!  One of our girls was 14 a couple of weeks ago and I made this poster for her...picture from our hike to Phantom Ranch last April and IF poem by Rudyard Kipling...she doesn't understand it yet, but hopefully in time ;-)

I was going to make this newsletter different from all my others…just because things are so different right now, but then I thought that it is also important to maintain some normality...can anyone else relate?  On that note, I tried to choose some topics that would be suitable for our current climate and hopefully bring a smile to your face!

The devil is in the detail!  This months latest and greatest includes a selection of some of my recent and favorite detail wedding pictures!  If you are unlucky enough to have had to rearrange your wedding, make sure you plan your wedding detail photographs with your photographer for when you reschedule.  They should capture all the little and big things that you have spent so much time and money getting perfect!

My summer vacation photo competition has come early this year!! The weather is warming up and spring break and Easter are around the corner.  Get your camera out and capture some photos for our competition...I'm excited to see what you create! Details below!

Do you have a little more time on your hands right now…do your kids?  Check out 'For the Photographer in You’.  It outlines a great way to focus and maintain enthusiasm, while learning a new skill!

My own camera fun comes from a recent walk in our garden…a splash of color to brighten your day!  Light painting is the subject for the panoramic passion and Oprah closes with the quote!

As always, I would love if you get in touch with any thoughts or comments….Stay safe and I hope to see you soon!!!!

Have a great April.

Cheers,

~ Tracey xxx

Latest and Greatest - The Devil is in the Detail!

It’s unusual for photographers to get some downtime during a wedding, but if it appears...we grab it! There’s always something to capture when so much time, money and effort have gone into making the day as perfect as possible.  We always build in some time to capture the wedding details such as rings and favors, but sometimes, the moment can’t be planned…check out the worn out puppy below, events can be exhausting for everyone :-)

Spotlight - Photography Competition

My kids are doing online school as I’m sure you are familiar if you have school age kids and they have been asked to journal as part of their homework.  I think this is a very interesting time to write thoughts down and document the 'day to day'.  This can also be done in pictures and I encourage you to capture little events that will help tell a story..messy bedrooms, kids and boardgames, soccer juggling.  I normally run a summer vacation photo competition, but this year, I’m running a spring one.

The winner will receive a $40 gift card from a local restaurant that can be used when the shelter at home is lifted and can choose from a 1 hour photography session (with five high resolution image included) or an hour of photography training with us (worth $250)

For the Photographer in You -  Ideas Jar!

Have you ever created a jar of good ideas?  Perhaps fun things to do over the summer holidays that you can select from when everyone gets bored?

This is our jar!  It contains great stuff like, make a movie, plan a party, visit the beach!  You might be wondering what this has to do with your love of taking pictures?

It is an easy step to think of using this method to learn new techniques, experiment and keep learning fresh and challenging!  Simply create a jar full of items (LEGO, business cards, guitar pics, clothes pegs etc).  On each item list a single aspect of photography that you want to learn or a specific subject to photograph.  Your list should include the subjects and techniques that you are interested in and should relate to the level of expertise you are at.  Here’s a few ideas to get you started….

Wide open aperture
Slow shutterspeed (less than 1/60th second)
Pets
Monochrome
Self portrait
Shoot at ground level
Patterns
ISO
Bulb
Roses
Kids

Have a particular time during the week when you will pull an item randomly from the jar and practice the technique.  It’s a great method and allows you to focus on a single subject or technique that you can dedicate some time to researching and understanding better.

I wish I’d thought of this myself but credit has to go to Justin….the best online guitar tutor!!  He actually has three jars…one for practice ideas, one on hold (for things that he doesn’t want to work on currently) and finally one for done (for things he’s achieved). Any of the ideas can be switched between any jars as he makes progress and of course new ones can be added!

For anyone who is interested in exactly how he does it, or guitar!!  Here’s the link.

Little Ditty About My Own Camera Fun - Blossoming Azaleas

In isolation, photography can be a real friend!  I took a walk around our garden this week and chose our blooming azaleas to photograph.  Me, I’m into an abstract rendition of the flower and colors…here are some of my favorites.

Panoramic Passion - Historic Church Light Painting

Light painting; takes a bit of organizing and planning, and it helps to bring a friend!  The results can be really cool.  This picture is from a church in Dorset, shot just before sunset.

Follow me on Instagram to see how I post these panoramic images threeup @traceymedcalfephotography or @businessbrandimaging for more business like posts!
