Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter!
Dear <<First Name>>,

The still-evolving COVID-19 crisis has affected all of us both personally and professionally. We are all still adjusting to a new lifestyle encompassing social distancing, working from home, caring for your children and other family members, and remote teaching and research. In these uncertain times, remember that we are a community and we are here to support each other, one day at a time.

Stay safe and let's stay in touch!

Cheers,
The IndoorChem Team

Project Highlight: Improved Chemical Characterization of Indoor Organics by Isomer-resolved Spectrometry
"The primary goal of this project is: to couple gas chromatography and chemical ionization mass spectrometry (GC-CIMS) to provide resolution of isomers with different chemical functionalities alongside characterization of unknown compounds, and to measure isomer-resolved emissions from occupants of buildings to better understand humans as a ubiquitous and highly variable indoor emissions source."

Water uptake by indoor surface films
Heather Schwartz-Narbonne and D. James Donaldson, Scientific Reports

"Indoor surfaces provide a plentiful and varied substrate on which multiphase reactions can occur which can be important to the chemical makeup of the indoor environment. Here, we attempt to characterise real indoor surface films via water uptake behaviour and ionic composition. We show that water uptake by indoor films is different than that observed outdoors, and can vary according to room use, building characteristics, and season."

Bleach cleaning: indoor emissions, chemistry, and impacts on air quality
By Jimmy Mattila

"Given the serious health and IAQ concerns associated with bleach use, we implore readers to consider alternative cleaning methods whenever possible. If bleach use is absolutely crucial, we recommend users prepare bleach solutions per manufacturer instructions (i.e. dilute solution sufficiently with water, and never mix with other cleaning solutions), and clean in a well-ventilated environment."
