Welcome to the March edition of the Graduate Coach newsletter.

I hope that you are all well. In light of the current COVID-19 outbreak, I wanted to give you an update from the team here at Graduate Coach.

Please forward this email to your family members and friends who know a graduate that is struggling to land a graduate job. Also, feel free to reply to this email with any questions or comments.

Many thanks,

1. BE PREPARED TO NAIL VIDEO INTERVIEWS

As we have been advised to practise social distancing and avoid public gatherings, many face-to-face interviews have been cancelled. As an alternative, companies have been interviewing graduates via video.

Three of our graduates have had their interviews changed to a video format, rather than face-to-face.

All graduates will now have to become video interview confident.

Our online video interview course is unique, as grads can get instant feedback from us and they can watch their own interview.

It is remarkable how quickly people can improve, once they have had the opportunity to watch themselves.

So, if you know of anyone who is video interview underconfident, get them to click the link below, and buy the course.

'Nail that Interview' online course will give you a complete structure and insights on how to interview. Module 7 discusses Telephone and Video Interviews and contains a video interviewing tool so you can practise, as does Module 5.

2. APPROACH SMALLER COMPANIES

Some smaller companies are still hiring, and they are making hiring decisions quickly.

Every graduate needs to take this into account right now.

3. EXPECT DELAYS FROM LARGER COMPANIES BUT BE PROACTIVE

Two of our grads have had their hiring delayed, despite previously being told that they were about to get formal offer letters.

There will be a lot more of this and grads and parents need to be aware of this.

Remote working is also leading to a real slow down in decision making and we do not think this will improve in the next 12 weeks.

Nevertheless, it still pays to keep an eye on who is hiring and remain proactive at all times.

4. IF YOU ARE OFFERED A JOB - TAKE IT

We always advise graduates that their first job doesn’t need to be their ideal career choice. What is important, is that graduates get real-life work experience under their belts, as soon as possible after graduation.

One of the major changes in postgraduate employability is that nowadays companies and recruiters no longer expect their graduates to have worked for two years in their first job. So long as the graduate has six months of work experience companies will look favourably upon them.

So our advice always is: get working, get earning, get learning!

Your second graduate job is always ten times easier to get than your first.

5. BUILD YOUR NETWORK

During this time of uncertainty, you may face several setbacks and rejections. It is vital that you use this time to build up your professional network.

If you receive rejections, as well as requesting feedback, ask them if they know anyone else who is currently hiring.

One of our graduates recently landed a  job by doing this. After receiving a rejection, he asked the interviewer if they knew anyone who was hiring. The interviewer then put him in touch with a friend of his who worked in a similar company.

He was invited to three interviews in quick succession. The very next day, he was offered a role.

6. GET FAMILIAR WITH REMOTE SOFTWARE

As more and more companies are enabling their workforce to work from home, it is crucial that you become familiar with commonly used software used by remote teams.

Software examples include, but are not limited to: Slack, Trello, G Suite and Zoom.

7. UPSKILL

We offer digital internships as part of our full coaching programme, which enables grads to gain Google certifications and to get hands-on experience in SEO (search engine optimisation), PPC (pay-per-click) and digital analytics.

Having this digital internship on your CV is making our grads highly employable.

We strongly advise anyone who is looking for a job during this time to take the time to really gain a deep understanding of the field they are hoping to work in.

There are some excellent blogs, videos and infographics online that will help you to increase your knowledge and become more employable.

SUMMARY

Meanwhile, life goes on and this too will pass. I am old enough to have worked through several major recessions, including the three day week and I am confident that things will eventually return to normal.

In the meantime, we are busy helping our grads to succeed! Albeit remotely for now.

We are definitely open for business! Please forward this email to anyone who would benefit from our help.
